If you plan on renting a car--- schedule it before you leave because most companies will pick you up at the airport so you can skip the taxi cost. I just rented a car for 9 days in June, with insurance, for about $210 from First Crown Car Rental. Last June we took a taxi to our hotel and rented a car from them. The rental car was double the price! We payed over $400 for 7 days.

Rental car is best if you wish to see the island while visiting. Parking in Gr Case is tight; we have an apartment rented in center of Gr Case on Boulevard du Grand Case with a garage. People will park in front of the garage unless you make it clear you are present, using the garage, and do not allow parking. Some will park there nonetheless.

It is recommended to take photos of all surfaces of the rental car when you pick it up, including sides bellow doors etc. to record every, repeat EVERY scratch and ding already on the car. The borrow stories most repeated are being charged hundred of dollars for allegedly new scratches.

Road maps are casual, not always easily followed, and road signs tasks a while to get used to. Still, the island is small and the roads are easy to learn. As always advised, DO NOT leave anything valuable in your car, or unattended anywhere, really.

Have fun!

We rented from Europcar. We have read horror stories about rental operators. We rented a Toyota Carola. Europcar first gave us the tiniest car they have; when I objected they said "oh, yes, sorry; you are right" and gave us a Toyota Yaris, one grade below a Carola. They still charged for a Carola!!

If you don't want to rent a car, a taxi is the best way to get to Grand Case. Where are you staying? They may be able to recommend a cab service or arrange for you to rent a car for a day or two if you want to do some exploring.
