L'Esplanade vs. Grand Case Beach Club for our Aug. honeymoon

My fiance and I are planning to split our 10-night honeymoon during the 1st week of August between St. Martin and the Viceroy Anguilla. We're drawn to the French Side of St. Martin because we're foodies and can't wait to try the restaurants in Grand Case, and because it seems more secluded. We're thinking it makes sense to stay in Grand Case (we can always drive to other beaches on SXM during the day, plus we'll have our beach fix in Anguilla), but we're torn between L'Esplanade and the Grand Case Beach Club. Is L'Esplanade worth the extra $$? Or should we save that money for all the amazing food we'll be eating? I guess the big question is, how much nicer is L'Esplanade? It's so hard to tell from the pictures!

Thanks in advance for the insights and advice!

PS - We're open to other suggestions besides these 2 hotels if we've missed a hidden gem :)

my fiance and I are in the same boat, we are spending the first week on St Martin and the second in Anguilla. We too are debating on the Grand Case Beach Club but we also are looking at Le Petit Hotel as we want to be right on the beach. At this point I feel GCBC has more to offer but this is such a hard decision.

Both are on a narrow uncrowded beach, in addition GCBC has a more expanded small beach at the far end of the property while Petit has no pool GCBC has a small roof top pool open to the sun (no shade), you can use the pool at Petit sister resort, quite a long walk however.

Congratulations & Best Wishes.

When it comes to ambiance, L'Esplanade, hands down, beats Grand Case Beach Club. L'Esplanade is truly made for honeymooners BUT if you don't mind taking a step down, then Grand Case Beach Club is fine. GCBC is a typical resort with nice accommodations and a beach right in front. L'Esplanade is up the hill from GCBC but the rooms are spectacular, the views breathtaking, and the pool perfect for afternoon swims. My nephew and his bride stayed at L'Esplanade for their honeymoon and found it perfect for their needs. Now when he travels to the island, he takes that slight step down and stays at our condo...lol... because he doesn't need that "honeymoon catered to" attention (it also helps that the price is right as well..lol)

If your stay in Anguilla will be considered the time for "honeymooners paradise", then staying in Grand Case will be perfect if you are looking to save some money. Le Petit hotel is very nice as well but the walk to the restaurants is not as easy as the other 2, which may require taking the car because of the lack of sidewalks.

Keep in mind that St. Martin/St. Maarten is not an island where you stay in one place day and night. You are encouraged to travel to the various beaches (which means you should definitely rent a car) and not just depend on one. In fact, even most people who stay at GCBC do not stay on the property all day. They usually travel to the other beaches and use the one within their property for late afternoon swims. They also travel to both sides of the island because the Dutch side has fabulous restaurants and nightlife as well (without the conversion fees and Euro factor)....it's just that most magazine articles don't cover the Dutch side for some very odd reason.

In the meantime, an early congrats on your upcoming nuptuals!

Congratulation to your forthcoming wedding!

I visited Viceroy last week, and it is an amazing property very impressive at first sight and there is an beautiful sunset from the rooms/terrace. The problem though albeit from my short visit was the noisy clientele/ambience which would not be for what I want from a romantic and peaceful honeymoon.Additionally the beaches at Viceroy are not the best on the island and not that accessible from the property. Also the property covers a large area so that the distance from your room to the facilities could be a long walk. The Viceroy complex is not completely finished so there could be some disruption.

A lot of people recommend Cap Jaluca for beaches, service and romance! A less expensive option might be Frangipani on the Meads Bay. Much smaller, a great restaurant and one of the best beaches.

For Grand Case I would recommend either L'Esplanade or Le Petit Hotel.

I also recommend going to St. Martin first as after Anguilla, St Martin might be a disappointment.

I am also trying to determine where in Grand Case to stay for a vacation later this year. The current front runner is Le Petit, however, I am concerned that the walk back from the restaurants/bars at night will be dark and a bit scary. Does anybody have any experience with this walk and thoughts on safety?

"dark and a bit scary"

- well maybe the first night a bit scary for some, it is a bit of a walk to the center of the village.

My wife and I just returned from St. Martin and Anguilla last week. We had a great time thanks to a lot of help from this board.

We are also from NY...late 20's and married for less than a year. We also like to consider ourselves "foodies".

Not sure what you are looking for but here is my take.

We stayed on Orient Beach for 3 nights. We liked Orient during the day, with all the beach bars, etc. Like everyone had said...nothing to do there at night. You can go into Grand Case for dinner and actually a pretty cool club...Le Shore.

We then went to Anguilla early Thursday morning until late Friday afternoon. Anguilla's beaches were incredible...I would have to say much nicer than St. Martin's. It was also very nice because you almost feel secluded...your own personal island on some spots. Thing about Anguilla is that it is very quiet...not much going on...especially during the week. If you are driving around it gets very dark and the roads you have to take to get to restaurants and bars almost seem like unlit back roads...might be the safest place but doesn't feel like it at times.

We then went back to St. Martin and stayed in Simpson Bay. This had a lot to do...Casino's, trendy restaurants and clubs (Bamboo Bernie's, Tantra. Bliss). Also a lot of side of the road casual restaurants (Pineapple Pete's, Lee's, etc.)

I would definitely say that Simpson is the most fun portion of St. Martin. And probably our favourite. Can do day trips to Phillipsburg, Marigot. Although the beach is nice it isn't "Honeymoon" nice...if that makes sense.

Now when it comes to the restaurants...they are very good. Only thing is, when you go on vacation I don't really want to have what I can eat in NY. I can go for a Filet Minon or lobster anywhere here that is probably the best in the world...and the prices aren't very different from NYC.

Again, both Anguilla and St. Martin have great food but as a foodie the local spots are the ones you would want to hit up.

So all that being said...Grand Case wasn't really for us.

If you are staying at the Viceroy then pricing might not be the biggest problem...so you might want luxury in St. Martin also...stay at the Westin in Dawn beach...rent a car and drive to the different areas.

Or stay at a very nice place in Maho...you'll be able to walk to the nightlife...which might be good after a few days of doing nothing in Anguilla.

In terms of the Grand Case beach club if you could request a room (we are thinking a ocean view studio) what would be the best block of rooms to request? we are thinking the second floor would be nice and as close as the water as possible.

In case you haven't decided yet, here's another vote for L'Esplanade. We stayed there for part of our honeymoon several years ago. The details in the room were so nice. Fresh flowers on top of your toilet paper roll...etc. Really comfortable bed, nice linens, everything new or seemed new. A bottle of champagne and bread upon check-in. All the staff very nice and helpful. You can walk right down to the beach down a path past a tea shop. The pool was also nice. It's a very honeymoon-ey place, as others have mentioned.
