International drivers permit to drive in St. Maarten

I was checking into renting a car for our upcoming trip to St. Maarten, and was told by Avis Car Rental that you have to have an international driver's permit in order to rent a car/drive there.

Is this true, and do the other car rental companies have the same requirement?

We will be staying on the French side of the island, and were also wondering if converters are needed for our cameras and other appliances.

Have never heard of it being required. If it is true, which I doubt, try another agency as a US State drivers licence is always acceptable.

The French side is 220-250 Volts at 60 Hz (yes, 60 and not 50 as in France - this lets the two sides of the island pool their generating capacity). The plugs have two round pins and the sockets have two round holes and, sometimes, a protruding square ground pin coming out of the socket.

You can go to any Radio Shack to buy the Power Converter (Transformer) and the little bag of Adaptor Plugs. Even though the transformer will have the French-style round pins, you still need the adaptor plugs because the sockets are recessed and you have to slip the round pin adaptor on to the pins of the transformer in order to get it plugged all the way in.

Buy the large, heavy 1500 watt version of the transformer, you can use it with either hairdryers or battery chargers.

One word of warning - do NOT plug anything else into an outlet labeled "shavers only"

No you don't need an internationa drivers license to rent on St Maarten though it would be good to brush up on reading the international signage. You do have to be 25 or older to rent a car from most if not all car rental places.

You will need a converter on the french side but not the Dutch.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the help we've received with our questions.

We talked to Avis Rental again and no international driver's permit is needed to drive on St. Maarten.

Just as an FYI, all airlines do not include the departure tax in the price of the ticket. Specifically, U.S. Air does not.

Thanks for everything!
