Cash or credit

Thinking about taking a trip to St. Martin in August. I'm wondering if the restaurants in Grand Case, and other areas around the island all take credit, or am I going to need to make sure I carry a bunch of cash with me.

You get a better deal if you have have cash as many restaurants in Grand Case will do $1.00 to 1 Euro. If you charge on a credit card they will bill you the Euro price and for a 100.00 dollar/euro dinner, you will find a charge on your card of $ 135.00 when you get home as the charge will be made in euro and then converted into dollars at the going rate. Make sure your hotel has a safe as you don't want to carry a large amount of cash with you, and better to lock it up.

Cash is better on the French side since most credit card companies charge you a foreign transaction fee. Also, as mentioned - some restaurants give you a $1 to 1 euro cash rate. Travelers cheques are the same as cash and are widely taken. I carry a mix of both.

On the dutch side - you can use a credit card without incurring fees.

Also, there are plenty of ATMs on the Dutch side that dispense US $, so you can always pick up cash there if you don't feel comfortable carry a lot on you.

And many of the smaller places do not take CC's.
