Looking for suggestions - where to stay?

We are hoping to celebrate our 10th anniversary in St. Maarten next February 2015.

We are looking for suggestions for a place to stay, condo or hotel - would prefer not to do all-inclusive as we would like to get out & explore.

Simpson bay seems a great location, we prefer beach-front but don't necessarily need 5-star as I doubt we'll spend too much time in the room - clean, safe & great location are top priorities (and a spot for a rental car).

Appreciate any tips/suggestions!

We've always stayed at the Alamanda since our first trip 10 years ago (it was new back then). Granted, it's been 6 years since we've been back, but we're going next week and booked the Alamanda again. It's a litle bit dated by now, but we love it there. We really enjoy staying steps away from Orient Beach plus Orient Village (lots of restaurants) is literally behind the hotel. We always get a car during our visits so we can hit other beaches during the week.

We are also going for our 10th anniversary, we got married on Anguilla during that first trip in 2004 :)

Suggest Flamingo, Simpson Bay Resort, Atrium and Royal Palm. All has a swim beach and close to restaurants and night life in a safe area.

Is Simpson Bay resort the same as Simpson Bay Marina,Suites & Resort? I am a bit skeptical of that place after reading some other posts on the forums about bankruptcy, having to pay extra to upgrade room and them making you change your room mid-stay...thanks for the replies :)

Flamingo is right next door. Shares same beach. Bank-rupture issues are over.

We've been going to La Vista for the past 10 years (we own a timeshare there).

Nice small family-owned resort, 2 pools, onsite restaurant.

Right down the road/beach from Flamingo. The beach is not as good as Flamingo or SBR, but every room has a view of the Caribbean.

I second SXMScubaman's recommendation of the Flamingo.

thanks we will move the Flamingo to the top of our list of places to check out!

Now just have to hope this Caribbean version of our West Nile mosquito virus doesn't impact anything :(

I just stayed at the Royal Palm. We loved it and loved simpson bay. I will stay at this exact hotel next visit....great place, good restaurants in walking distance, safe to walk around alone and at night, grocery and liquor store a hundred yards down the road., etc.
