How to Avoid Simpson Bay road construction!

Any suggestions on where to take the local buses to avoid the terrible traffic delays in the Simpson Bay area? We just want to see things, and can gladly go where it's easiest. What's out there that doesn't go near the road construction hangups? Thanks. Traveling there Dec 1. 2011 JanG

Local buses are part of the traffic mix. You can avoid the area by simply not going there - the rest of it is a matter of luck and timing if you must go to Simpson Bay.

Since there is only one road thru Simpson Bay, the buses sit in the traffic along with everyone else.

The only way to avoid it is to go clockwise, but the buses stop at Mullet Bay going clockwise, so you won't get far.

I had this prob two weeks ago when i visited and Google earth helped(even though the WiFi charge was a bit crazy) as the map from the rental company wasn't that detailed. Here's a link to the map of the area. You can look at it to see the side streets. Sadly, if you are as far back as the bridge it 's just matter of patience as there are no true side streets that far back. keep in mind you'll have to rejoin the the line but you'll be further up and you'd have cut out quite a bit of traffic. Like i said it only works where there are side streets. The up sides are, the delay only affects traffic from Simpson bay to Phillipsburg and it gives you more time to enjoy the scenery (hey you may catch something you would have normally breezed by)

I guess I thought you were driving and wanted to avoid the traffic. Guess you can now use the map to plot your sights to visit.

A couple of clarifications.

There is only one road between the roundabout at the Tourism Office in Marigot to approximately the Tropicana Casino/Peking Market corner in Cole Bay. Any side roads between these two points will only ever end up back on the main road.

The traffic issue ends in Cole Bay at the bottom of the roundabout.

The traffic can be stopped anywhere from the end of the Runway in Simpson Bay to about the area of Pineapple Pete's. Although PP's is only about 1/4 mile from the spot where the traffic clears, it has taken us up to about 30 - 40 minutes to travel that small distance.

You should be able to find all of these points on a decent map.

The map link above is very good. It takes you right to the corner where Tropicana/Peking is.

Thanks for all you in the know! I have another question.

If my husband and I take a bus from Philipsburg counterclock wise and get the needed transfers in the French towns, is it a long trip to go that way to Marigot and then return the same way, avoiding Simpson's Bay area alrtogether? Or would the slow traffic continuing counterclockwise still be faster than go back through Grand Case etc? Also when are the busiest times - like around the world, early morning and from 3pm on to 7pm? Thanks, AliaJ.

It's probably about a 30 - 40 minute trip to Marigot from Philipsburg. Not including time spent waiting for the bus.

Hey, when you said 30-40 minutes, did you mean the long way around through Orleans and Gran Case? Sorry to be so picky, but I hear there will be 10,000 pouring out of the cruise boats the day we're there, but even though we also are from a cruise ship, we love to slip into the regular beat of life, and find we always avoid the masses that way! Again thinks AliaJ.
