Sounds like you might enjoy Villa Belle Mer. It is on the french side at Orient Bay. You will love it and it sounds like you enjoy luxury accommodations, so check it out at http://www.villabellemer.com

I stayed there in November and am returning this year it was so fantastic.

I think you would have no problem staying at the Mercure Simson. We have stayed there twice and are planning on staying there again in a few weeks. It is basic and the food isn't bad. It is quiet but if you are planning on being out most of the time like we were, it's not an issue. Plus, it is nice to spend the day there if you just want to hang out by the pool. I see they have hammocks this year...looking forward to that! It is also quite close to Marigot to catch the ferry to Anguilla. As well in the other direction, it is only about 10-15 minute drive to 2 casionos. Bottom line is it is not 4-5 star but a solid 3 and the price reflects that. If you are looking for more, go maybe to Maho.

I would suggest the Maho on the Dutch side as well..closer to casinos. And rent a car for sure to and explore island. You can always get the tour from the hotel to Anguilla. Or you can do it yourself and drive to the dock on the French side and park there...that's what I did.

Wait a minute - is the Mercure Simpson the one that always smells really bad when you drive by?

I too, think you will be happier in the Maho or Simpson Bay area. Safe - you can walk around to casino's, restaurants ect in the evenings. Take a puc crawl or sunset cruise. Get your car and explore both sides of the wonderful island.

Aside from the mixed reviews, I think your 18 yr old will be bored at Mercure.

As you're from Canada, can I assume this is a package deal? Can you get into any other places with your tour? If it's a great deal and the only place you can get, do it. Just be prepared to drive for fun. Will be nice to have a young, designated driver! (Or you could take turns!)

There is not much by the Mercure in Nettle Bay for your 18 y.o. There is a fantastic restaurant, Le Cigale, and the beach bar Laylas but you are probably better off in Maho, Cupecoy or Simpson bay if you like nightlife and casinos.

I've also heard there is an increase in crime in the sandy ground area.
