1 week at Flamingo in St. Maarten then Head to Anguilla?

Hi!! This is our first trip to SXM. We booked 7 days at the Flamingo in St. Maarten, but in order to get a better rate on our airfare, we had to fly for a duration of 9 days, therefore, we will have to fly back 2 days later (after we checkout), so we were thinking on our Flamingo check-out date, that we could head over to Anguilla and stay there for 2 days, and then fly out of SXM. Is that possible? How far is Flamingo to Anguilla, and how far is Anguilla to SXM? Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks so much!!!

Yes, a hop over to Angilla is very easily done. There is a ferry that leaves from Marigot every 45 minutes or so. The cost is $40/person round trip.for a day trip. For a two day trip you may ay a little more for the additional fee that is tacked on, but not much. From the Flamingo to Marigot is about a 25-30 minute ride and the ferry takes about 20 minutes. When on SXM, if you visit the French side, you can see Anguilla across the water from multiple locations.

There is also a boat that leaves from Simpmso Bay (Police dock by the bridge) that is very close to the Flamingo. It is GB Express. It is more expensive than the Marigot ferry, but more convenint.

I think you would really enjoy spending your additionl time in seeing Anguilla. The beaches are beautiul.

Thanks so very much Islandresident! We are so excited and don't even know where to start. This forum has been a great source of knowledge! Is there any place in particular that you would recommend staying or visiting in Anguilla while we are there? We are somewhat on a limited budget, but love to experience local, natural flavor. Thank you in advance!!

md_ocr, Anguilla is flat and relatively small - very easy to get around. Driving is on the left side. The main attractions are the relaxed way of life and beautiful beaches. Not much in the way of other sight seeing. The beaches that are most talked about and recommended are Meads, Rendezvous and Shoal Bay East (there is a Shoal Bay West also, but SBE is the one). Maundays Bay, about 5 minutes from Meads is also nice. Meads is about 25-30 minutes from SBE. And you will need to bring your passports, but you probably already know that.

You might also like seeing the upscale resorts - like Cap Juluca (Maundays Bay) and the Viceroy (Meads) and CuisinArt (Rendezvous).

Many fun places to go on Anguilla:

Shoal Bay East - Elodia's (good place to settle and rent chairs/umbrella; also good snorkeling right off beach on reef); Gwen's Reggae Bar (a must, great Rum Puch with nutmeg on top, around the bend on Upper Shoal Bay; but same beach as SBE; music Sunday afternoons); Tropical Sunset in another good place to set up, excellent food

Meads - Blanchard's Beach Shack and Staw Hat

Sandy Ground - Elvis's, Johnno's and the Pumphouse (check the nights for live music at each of these places; good location for the evening)

Rendezvous Bay - Dune Preserve and the Sunshine Shack

Places to stay that are a little less than the higher priced resorts: Shoal Bay Villas on SBE, Anacaona (not right on the beach, but not too far); Nicer places - Carimar, Frangipani and Turtle's Nest (Meads area).

Check for a copy of the Anguilla Guide newspaper at the ferry terminal to get information on current live music nights at which locations.

Check out Lloyd's Guest House. We ended up choosing Turtle's Nest becasue we wanted a kitchen, but Lloyd's seemed like a reasonable, nice place when I was doing my research. It gets good TA reviews.
