In June 2012, my family took the Allure of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise which included St. Maarten as one of the destinations. We were looking for an ATV excursion and did not see one through the cruise line that we liked. We decided to “go out on our own” and reserved two ATVs and one Cube (like a golf cart) with Solid ATV Scooter Rental (http://www.solidatvscooterrental.com/cube.html ). I would recommend this company to others.
My daughter (13) and I rode one ATV and my son (14) and husband road the other ATV. My parents (64 and 65) rode in the cube. Solid ATV was very honest and straight-forward to deal with and their prices were very reasonable for all day rentals (about $95 each for the ATVs and around $110 for the cube). The equipment was in good working order – one of the ATVs had some problems starting a couple of times. The owners did a great job explaining the equipment, providing maps, and giving us (free) soda/water.
We went to Orient Bay (and Solid ATV even directed us to the non-nude side that was more family oriented). When we got there, it was like having our own beach and was breath-taking. We thought the island was cleaner and more beautiful than St. Thomas.
We had two challenges with our day. (1) We kept getting lost. The island is a series of round-a-bouts and very few were labeled with street signs. We kept taking the wrong roads and ended up traveling on the inside of the island more than we wanted. (2) Initially getting to Solid ATV was a little tricky. You have to completely leave the port area and walk all the way out to the street. From there you can catch a taxi to Solid ATV, which is less than one mile away. You can call Solid ATV and they will pick you up but that would have been an expensive cell phone call for us. One Caution: When we got to the street we heard someone yell out ATVs and when we said “Solid ATV?”, the girl said “yes”. We thought she was from solid ATV and hopped in her car. She took us to Solid ATV but once there we found out she wasn’t actually with the company. She had an arrangement with the owner to bring people to his business and then she would get a percentage of the booking … as long as the renters didn’t already have a reservation. Since we had a reservation, the owner would not pay her a percentage of the booking. She was mad because we didn’t tell her we had a reservation. We said “you never asked – you acted like you worked for this company”. At that point the owner removed her from our presence and “took care of the situation”. When he returned he explained she had been in the wrong, not to worry about it, and proceeded to take good care of us.
Renting from Solid ATV Scooter Rental is definitely something we would do again.
