Divi or Sonesta

Which is a better all inclusive if you are looking for nice beach, close to casino and good night life?

As a resort, personally I prefer the Divi... its a beautiful place on its own little island/peninsula/inlet... Fantastic Resort, Remarkable Service, Nice beach. 10 Minute walk, or 2 minute drive into Front Street, where all the shopping is, and there are about 5 Casino's on that street. Not much else for nighlife.

Maho is also an equally comparable, excellent resort. Never heard a complaint about it, It is more the mega-hotel kind of Resort. Right by the airport, so you can head over to Sunset Beach Bar to watch the plane landings and take offs. There is their own little shopping strip (expensive shopping, better deals on frontstreet), along side the casino, and several fantastic restaurants and a few night clubs.

Very lively area in the Evening. Day time its extremely boring, as most people are out doing their own thing anyway. There is no beach, no matter how much they advertise or people tell you...THERE IS NO BEACH... they've got a probably 15 metre stretch of sand by the water, they call a beach, which is usually not even there most months of the year.

The closest beach is along side the runway/ sunset beach bar, and is a 2 minute walk from the hotel... or there is Mullet Bay, which is a 15 min walk, 2 min drive, and is one of the best beaches on the island...

Well now you can decide, I've provided you with pro's and con's of both places.

Another note, You only want to use the All-Inclusive to get a good room rate & the drinks. Half the beauty of St.Maarten is going out and experiencing the so many restaurants and variety of cusines, afterall it is known as the Cusine Captial of the Caibbean, & Shopping Capital of the Caribbean. You will limit your enjoyment if you restrict yourself to the All-Inclusive meals.

Kris... Thank you for the very thoughtful post. I agree with you about the all inclusive but the only reason I get it is because of the drinks.. not the food. We will definitely get our moneys worth with just the tropical drinks alone. I am fortunate that i really don't need to budget myself so I can still enjoy the other resturants. Thanks again

We too are staying at the Sonesta -- all inclusive and one of the big factors is the drinks -- We can always go out on our own if we want to (renting a car) but we stayed at an All Inclusive in Aruba and wouldn't do it any other way. Had a blast!!!

Thats good to hear guys!

With the all-inclusive you just need to make sure you dont get screwed on the room, with a decent view if not an ocean quite. Maho has quite a few horrible room views, so you might even want to contact the hospitality manager at the hotel and tell him its your first time, and you want to make it a special getaway for the spouse and would appreciate any extra effort on the hotels behalf to make it a more enjoyable vacation. Or just tell them your a travel agent, then for sure you will get treated like royalty lol..

Oh and in the all-inclusive you need to watch out for what they pour in your drinks... they always tend to give you the cheap rums and vodka, etc etc.. I usually specify that I want Myers rum, or Bacardi or Absolut or w/e.
