Airports and Car Ferries

Are there car ferries between the islands? We might decide to fly into St. Thomas from Texas and then take a car ferry over to St Maarten (rental of course). Is this possible? There are extremely limited flights to St. Maarten. A link to anything ferry related for use during the week would be great. We would love to hope from island to island with our car via ferries. Thanks for any advice.

No regular ferries, and none of the rental companies will be keen on you taking the car. Island hopping is generally done by air and St Maarten has an international airport readily accessable from the US.

The only way to get here from St Thomas is via air. Ferries to the closer islands do not take cars.

Hoping from island to island here is international travel.

So renting a car is useful just to get around the island and to grocery stores? I assume we could also take people only ferries to other islands? Please advise...and thanks in advance.

Yes, you can get to Anguilla, St Barths and Saba by ferry from SXM. Don't know about St Thomas

There is no regular ferry services between St Thomas and St Maarten. You might be able to charter a boat, but this is quite uncommon. The crossing will in all likelyhood be rough. If you like to travel by sea and are an experienced yachting person, then renting a sailship might be another option.

Keep in mind that the distance from St.Thomas to St.Martins is 100 miles plus. A fair distance travelling by water.

You would be better to take Liat's non-stop from St. Thomas to St. Martin and rent a car once you get there. It leaves a bit after 7PM in the evening. It may sell out in high season, so book early.

You might want to also look at Liats service map on their website as a way to see what is feasible for island hopping. Also, check the arrivals and departures information for the airports of those islands to find the names of other carriers.
