First time to St. Maarten

Staying at the Sonesta Maho, not AI, looking for good food, great beaches and happy hours. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also looking for rental car for week. Best to book early, at the airport, or resort?

We stayed at the Maho last Feb., AI, and are returning this year - do your best to get a room not on the backside, where that dreaded sewage lagoon/tank is. Otherwise, the hotel is good. The staff could be more friendly, but we got used to it - we always try to be friendly to all staff, but it didn't consistently seem to make much difference at this hotel, I'm afraid. They weren't rude -just not as friendly as other destinations. What we really enjoyed was, in mid/late afternoon, walking down the beach to the Sunset Beach Bar, having a drink or two and watching the planes land and take off - too much fun - don't know why really, but it was!

We walked over to Mullet Bay beach and really enjoyed the water there - watch out for the odd big wave, or you will fill your swim suit with sand!

2. Re: First time to St. Maarten

Thanks for the info. We are going Feb 6-13 and although we need a lot of R&R we are also looking to explore the island. We were able to get car rental info from other forums so thanks to those respondents our trip is coming together. For the first couple of days we will be staying around the Sonesta. Any suggestions on places to dine in that area?

Thanks again

Hey 2dogs

Cheri's Cafe is right there (next to Royal Casino) good food they have a variety show every night at 7pm You got 2 go 2 Sunset Beach Bar a must, (drink specials) you can watch the planes land and take off you are 200 ft away from the runway, bring your camera, they have a surf board with all the flight arrivals. Next to sunset is Bamboo Bernie’s- Wed night is a big party -ladies drink for free. Also free drinks daily ask the times. If you want finer dining go up the road to Atlantis World Copacoy. You have 6 great restaurants to eat at all 5 stars. 50 feet from the restaurants is a sign for CLIFHANGER BAR literally :) very cool no matter who advertises it no one beats the sunset there. Also it 2 for Tuesdays at the Greenhouse in Phillipsburg. You also have Buccaneer Bar behind the Atrium hotel, also just after the bridge in Simpson bay you have Spinnakers Yaht Club-THE BEST breakfast on the island! There is great Italian rest. just past the Airport called Laguna very good. There are so many great rest. in your area you don't even need to go to the French Side to eat. Remember they go by EURO $1.20 - $1.37 you don't get much for your money. If you pay cash some place do dollar for dollar. Remember if you eat on the French Side DO NOT TIP!! Only on the French side.

Good Luck

Tera and Bajatzu in Maho are my favorite. Sonesta has a bus to Orient beach so I would take advantage.
