Departing in February

We have been to St. Maartin once. Stayed on the Dutch side and absolutely loved it.

We loved the shopping and the food. The only mistake we made was going AI..

Never again. We missed out on alot of the good restaurants there.

The only problem we're having is deciding whether to stay on the Dutch side again, or the French side.

When we were there before , we frequented the French side and the lovely beaches.

Any suggestions???

In our 6 visits we have always stayed on the Dutch side. Here's why.

We always rent a car, so we can go wherever we want when we want. We love the French side beaches, so travel there during the day.

French side basically shuts down at nite. Not much to do after dinner.

We're not in to $$$$$ fine dining, so we don't eat on the French side for dinner.

Prefer to sleep near where we end our evenings, so we don't have to drive far after a few cold ones.

There are absolutely WONDERFUL places to eat on the Dutch side.

Having said that, in February we will be staying just over the border on the French side, only because we got a really good rate for high season. It will be a new experience for us, and not sure how we will deal with the driving home issue. We're not drunks, but even a couple of beers driving at night..... May have to find a little bar close by for our nightcap.

For our two weeks in May, we will be back to the Dutch side.

I prefer the Dutch side. If casinos and nightlife are much less important than beaches and cuisine, I would try the French side. Alamanda is a good choice or even Port D' Plaisance which is right on the border (but it is on the lagoon and not the ocean)

I always stay on the French side. I love the European feel of it. Also, the French side isn't built up like the Dutch side so you actually feel like you are getting away from the US for a little while. It is quieter, but I enjoy that since I rent a car and drive to nightlife/beaches. Last time I went - I stayyed at the Grand Case Beach Club and really enjoyed it. The entire staff was friendly/helpful and breakfast was included. I will be staying there again in July. Also, this hotel is within walking distance to Grand Case and all of the fabulous restaurants there.

As you can see, everyone has their favorites. I think it all depends on what you want to do with your vacation. We're not into casino's, and don't do the nightclub thing. We're actually home in bed most nites by 10. But still we prefer the Dutch side due to the driving issue at night.

Most everything closes up down there after dinner.

I like the Dutch side to stay at.

I love the French side ( Orient Beach ) and some of the restaurants there.

Either side is breath taking.

We went last June and are planning another trip sometime between Jan and March. We stayed in simpson bay and traveled to orient beach which is the best beach in st. martin. we adored the french side, the food, the people all great - take a trip to st. barts if time allows, it's quite an experience.

St. Bart's is about an hour or so from sxm by speed boat. lots of shopping, high price and low- whatever your flavor. its a cute frenchy town. we rented a jeep and toured around we found some nice secluded beaches with lots of pretty shells. just a quite little get away.
