Any Good?

Has anyone stayed at the "Great Bay Beach Hotel and Casino" on St. Maarten? We have traveled there twice. Staying at The Divi and Oyster Bay. We really want to stay again at Oyster Bay, but since we are staying at a timeshare we wanted as many options as possible. If someone has stayed there, please let me know what was good and bad. Thanks

We have never stayed there but a regular poster, Dan, stays there every year and loves it. It's the typical timeshare type of resort and has a nice beach that you can relax on as well as walk into Philipbsburg (if you don't mind the beach walk). I have not heard any complaints about the place so that is good news and I have only read positive reports. It's not plush but is certainly sufficient to have a good trip.

The t/s's at The Great Bay are quite nice....We stay on the hotel side...But have stayed on the ts side...private pool and much quieter!

You are a 10 minute walk to town (Philipsburg)along the beach...the food is good(In my opinion)but you know what the restaurants are like there...so I don't have to tell you.

There is parking across the street.

Pam and I have been there 9 times...we have grown to know and like all the staff!

If you need specifics..just let me know!!

Have a blast!!

Have you ever stayed at Oyster Bay. I hate to ask is it comparable, but we loved OB. How is the noise level? Are the rooms old or updated?

We have stayed at Oyster Bay Beach resort. It is a nice property on a finger of land with water on three sides. Nice views from most of the units of the ocean and St. Barths, Oyster Pond & Dawn Beach.

No real noise from the construction at the far end.

We were at OB in March of '07 and there was construction then at the entrance to the place. Is it still going on. Do you know anything about the Divi and what kind of construction has happened there. I was surprised to hear it was damaged by a hurricane. We were there in Feb of '06.

The construction outside the gate to OBBR is completed, Coral Beach Club now occupies that part of the beach. The construction I referred to is inside on the OBBR property at the far end away from the gate, they are expanding the resort.

Divi has completed all construction and renovation and any related work to the hurricane.

Here is a link to a photo/story about the Coral Beach Club located outside the OBBR gate. It seems they built without proper permits and may have to tear down part or all of the building - more construction in reverse, more noise..

What about the french side. We visited there for shopping and eating but never stayed. Do you know of any good resorts there. We are the quiet type with relaxation our goal for vacation.

I recommend Orient Beach. Small, quiet and relaxing hotels that are just a few steps off the beach are:

L'Hoste

Cap Caraibes

Caribbean Princess

Alamanda

These hotels are a block from Orient Village.

There are quite a few restaurants and bars in Orient Village. Safari Grill (French), Ti Chi (Asian), Le Piment (pizza, casual dining), Cote Plage (French),Little Italy (pasta) Across the street is Planet Orient (French), a small Belgium type bistro/bar, and Tap 5 for pizza and other light meals. Le Cadre serves mostly tapas and La Chapelle is a sports bar/club/restaurant that stays open late. Additionally right outside Orient complex on the main road is Rancho Del Sol for dinner and drinks.

Several beach bars have parties at night during high season - Waikiki, Budha Bar at Bikini, Kontiki and Boo Boo Jams, Koko Marine for lunch. Check out Kpasa.com for music, happy hour, parties, etc. information.

There are no ATM's in Orient Village or in Grand Case. Most restaurants expect tip to be paid in cash even if a credit card is used. It's is a good idea to carry some cash in USD and or Euro.

Thank you for all the great info. We are so comfortable on the Dutch side I think we will return there. Also, after my research I think the Oyster Bay or Divi are where we want to be. I can't wait to go back!!
