Great Bay vs. Sonesta Maho

Which of these 2 would you recommend? They both seem to get great reviews, so I guess it comes down to

1) location - Which is closer to the "action", which I'm guessing would be downtown Phillipsburg?

2) food - which meals/options are better?

3) rooms - which rooms are more comfortable/spacious?

Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

We were at Great Bay in April and had a great time. There were 14 of us and had no problems at all. Rooms were great, clean and good ocean views. Food, drinks and service were very good also. There is very little night life there but you are only 7-10 min walk to Philipsburgh. Plenty of taxis and places nearby to go.

Philipsburg is dead at nighttime, and not the place to walk around late, because most places are closed. Maho Beach is different. Tourists go to Maho, cruise ship visitors at day time stay in Philipsburg!

The other two questions are impossible to answer. Which hotel? which restaurants? There are 300 restaurants and bars on the island, imagine waht range! There are 50 hotels. The Maho beach area has several, as has Philipsburg. The hotels in Philipsburg are more in the lower categories with a few exceptions.

Have fun!

I have stayed at both hotels. The food at Maho is hands down the winner. It is the best food I have ever had at an all inclusive that was not a 5 star resort.

The grill restaurant at Maho serves steak, ribs, pizza, nachos, fish, chicken wings etc. every day. It is included in the price so you do not have to pay extra for premium dishes such as seafood or steak. The buffet has so many choices that you will always find lots of things to try. They have theme nights every night and a seafood and rib BBQ once a week.

The drinks at the bar are very good.

You can walk across the street at night and go to the casino or disco. There are also a lot of clubs/bars near the airport such as Bamboo Bernie's, Bliss and Sunset beach bar. They are all a cheap cab ride away.

Maho also offers a free shuttle to Orient Beach three times a week. At Great Bay you have to pay $10.00 for the shuttle.

The food at Great Bay is not as good as Maho, however it is adequate and you will not go hungry. You have the option of ordering off a menu for breakfast and lunch if you do not like anything on the buffet. However this is not publicized, you have to ask a server for the menu. They do have prime rib on Friday nights which is pretty good.

At night, they have entertainment in the lounge but it is fairly low key. I hung out at the bar every night chatting with the bartender Michael who makes wonderful drinks.

Everyone was raving about the Greenhouse in Phillipsburg as the place to go on Tuesday night for 2 for 1 drinks all night. They have a dance floor and a DJ.

All in all, you get what you pay for. Maho is more expensive so you should expect better quality food and drinks.

I am going back to the island next month and I am having a tough time choosing which hotel I will stay at this year.
