    Honeymooning in St Lucia in June! Staying at La Haut Resort

    1st time to the Caribbean and we can't wait to get to Soufriere! We're staying at La Haut for our honeymoon in mid-June. These forums are wonderful -- have already got some great ideas, suggestions, etc. Thank you all! We're going to tackle the "to rent a car or not to rent a car" question once we arrive and get an idea how the roads are and if we can handle it. I did have some quick general questions if anyone can assist:

    Can we go to places like Ladera, Chocolat, Jade Mountain, Fond Doux, Sugar Beach and Anse Chastanet even if we aren't staying at any of those places? I'm guessing the restaurants and bars at those places are pretty welcoming to non-guests? Any restrictions at all?

    What restaurants/bars are closest to La Haut? Anything else good within walking distance?

    Yes, you can visit all those resorts for lunch/dinner any time you want. You can do the plantation tour/hike at Fond Doux, the chocolate tour at Hotel Chocolat, etc all on your own too - just call and make a reservation and pay at the resort.

    The beaches at AC and SB are public (all beaches in St. Lucia are public), so you can enjoy them, snorkel from the beach, rent snorkel equipment from the resort, etc too. You can rent loungers at both also, or just throw your towel down anywhere along the beach (not under hotel property). SB has a section of free loungers to the fra right of the beach to use also.

    There is little to nothing in easy walking distance from LH. It is set on a steep hillside (steep!!), and the highway is narrow with no sidewalks. You could conceivably walk to Beacon up the hill (steep and twisting - not recommneded as cars are right on top of you), or down to the village bellow (better - downhill and a few less turns, able to stay on the outside more). You would definitely need transport back up though! Lol.

    Definitely consider renting a car as taxis add up fast! Driving is really not all that difficult, just take it slow and steady. Takes a few minutes to re-orient to the "wrong" side of the road, but after that no probs. Definitely wait till you're here though to decide.

    La Haut is wonderful - we love it. Have a great time!

    Sure, you can go to the different properties on your list for lunch or dinner. While you are in this area, another good restaurant to add to your list is Orlando's, which is in Soufriere. Orlando used to be the chef at Dasheene (Ladera's restuarant).

    La Haut sits on the north side of Soufriere town. Many of the properties you listed are on the south side of town, so you would need transportation to visit. Anse Chastanet is on the north side but because of where it is located does require some transportation. Unfortunately, there aren't many walking options from La Haut. The terrain is also very hilly which makes it challenging to walk. Having a car is a good idea.

    Places to visit that would be closer would be ones that are very close or withing town including Hummingbird Resort, Still Beach House, Orlando's, Archie's, Water Front De Belle View, etc.

    La Haut will shuttle you to the places you mentioned for about half the cost of a taxi, however it is best to arrange it in advance, as there are certain times of day the shuttle is not available.

    thank you for choosing st lucia , soufriere for having your honeymoon , you have indeed good taste again for this hotel of choice , in soufriere you are allowed to visit any of the properties , there are not any restrictions whatsoever , there are lots of locals places to eat and drink in the town , but you should rent a car to be at your very own liberty to get around with not delay or waiting on resort shuttle to take you around , there are also local companies which offer many local tour packages , like land and sea tours dolphin and whale, watch, nature trails hikes and mudbath at volcano, shopping to the north full day packages and also provide you with a driver guide to take you around if you have a rented car .
