The robbery took place at Diamonf Falls & Botanical Gardens. 3 men are already in custody, with 1 having been caught after bragging to friends - he was arrested Sat and has turned in a full written and verbal confession, and helped lead the police to the other 2. Some cash and a few items have been recovered. (13 people were actually robbed, on the grounds of the Gardens, not all in the bus) You can read the news story at www.htsstlucia.org or DBS Television's website

So - good news there!

Hi NursePlymouth!

We drive ourselves sometimes but mostly use taxi drivers and try to avoid times when cruise ships are in. We have visited the Botanical gardens many times. I like the private baths there as one gets a real sense of history and the water is great for tired muscles! We do get some hassle sometimes on the island and there is one guy in Soufriere who is a notorious pest but , on the whole, we have found the Lucians warm and welcoming. We get involved in various activities when we are there. It is a beautiful island. Do take out baby clothes, pens, pads stc for the schools if you can as they are in short supply. the parents have to buy everything for their kids at school and there is a lot of poverty. Have a great time and do report back!

If you are bringing baby items- let StLuciaDebs know and she can arrange to have them picked up at your resort, or if they are specific for someone/some group - let all of us here know and we can direct you to the right agency/people. If it's small items as gifts for the staff, then simply give them to the staff with notes of thanks for them to show management in case they are questioned about them (possible theft or whatever).

Just driving through Soufriere made me grateful to be going home to the United States. Poverty is a big problem. We saw a woman with two kids getting water out of a community pipe, because they didn't have indoor plumbing. Soufriere did not look like the safest place on the island. We didn't have any problems, but we felt like we were being watched the whole time we were walking around. That being said, it shouldn't keep you from passing through on the way to other attractions. St. Lucia is a beautiful island, and you just need to be aware when you are out.

Just because people are poor does not mean they are going to rob or hurt you. Yes it can be a bit intimidating when it is crowded in Soufriere if you are not used places like that. But it is such a minority of people that are even trying to legitimately get money from you (like by selling goods), let alone going to rob you. Everyone else barely even glanced at us. Out a hundred or so people walking around when we were there on a crowded Friday afternoon, 1 offered to and then did help us park, 2 offered to sell me cannabis, and one wanted to sell us an origami bird for a dollar. Everyone was polite and just walked away if we declined. A nice woman stayed with my wife in the grocery store while I got the car and then helped us load up the groceries and did not want a dime for it. When we were there on a morning when it was not crowded, nobody even noticed us. The robbery would natural worry me a bit, but in practical probability terms, it is extremely rare, considering the hundreds of thousands of visitors.
