Rent a Car or Water Taxi?

We will be staying at Ladera in April. We would like to go up to Castries for a day. How much does it cost to catch a water taxi at Jalousie or in Soufriere round trip to Castries? I know that cars rent for about $65 to $80 per day. Would the drive up in a car be more satisfying than a 35 minute boat ride?

while I agree with gdbear65 that approaching the Pitons by sea is a magical, not to be missed sight, I would probably go up by boat and back by car. As water taxis/boats muct have lights to operate at night, not all water taxis do. Going up to Castries by boat and back by car allows you the flexibility to stay up north as long as you want shopping or for dinner, casino, whatever without having to worry about making it back before it gets dark, which is around 6:30pm.

That said, if you are definite that you will be back by sunset - then definitely, come back by water taxi - the sunset, the Pitons - amazing!

Enjoy your trip!!

ps: there are reputable water taxis with lights etc, in case you overstay past dark. Just do a little looking around first. Onee company I know is "tribute to the Lion", known as Congoman on these forums. He's there in Soufriere area (Choisel to be exact, which is right next door)

I highly recommend you see the southwest coast of St.Lucia by water and by land... if possible, as two separate outings.

Water taxi and land taxi guides, not always have the option of taking on a paying fare for their trip back, making a round trip price for either a bit more economical then one way fares.

From Ladera you can use the (scheduled) included shuttle to the Jalousie beach, pick up a water taxi from there. I believe the last scheduled shuttle back up to Ladera leaves Jalousie around 4:30/5:00 ish p.m. if you are returning later then this the water taxi can bring you to the Soufriere dock, then taxi up to Ladera.

I would also suggest you check out "Congomon" "Tribute to the Lion", and see what he might suggest.

I would also water taxi back...then you can stop for a drink in Marigot maybe, or go snorkelling on the way back..

You dont want to be all salty and walking around Castries on the way up if you feel to snorkel.

Bon jou rmm461,

I am located in Anse l'Ivrogne/Sevoigne at the SW foot of the Gros Piton. That is just south of Jalousie around the Gros Piton headlands. I offer round-trip full-day tours Jalousie-Castries in my water taxi Tribute To The Lion which is fully licensed, insured and equipped for day/night cruising.

Please check out www.tributetothelion.blogspot.com

Bless up! Paul

Bon jou mw104, been working the farm and taking care of visitors... will be back postin' regular soon. Blessings! Paul

Hi, We just returned Thursday from a month in Marigot Bay SL. We used Drive-a-Matic for our car rental and we were very pleased. If you need a taxi/tour driver we would recommend Kimbert Duplesis phvtours.com. He had the best prices for transfers and offered exemplary service.

You do want to experience that noth-south trip both on land and on sea. The advice you have received from the others is right on - a lot depends on your timing. Have an amazing trip to an amazingly beautiful island. You'll surely meet the most genuinely friendly people and feel very safe as we did.

Get a nice early start because the drive from Soufriere to Marigot can take about 2 hrs. and then it's another 1/2 hr. to Castries. You may want to visit Pigeon Island while you're in the north end. The beaches are lovely. Also right on the opposite side to the airport runway in Castries is Vigie Beach. Worth a stop. Have fun, Anita
