Deet-free insect repellent?

Hello everyone,

I need some type of natural insect repellent that will be effective in St. Lucia. I will be traveling there in the end of March and I am pregnant. Are there any effective products that don't contain Deet?

non-DEET stuff works by masking your scent, or making you smell unpleasant to the mosquito. substances which work, together or individually, are citronella, lavender, tea tree, geraniol, limonene, orange oil. feverfew can also work but is not recommended in pregnancy.

look for natural products included any, or preferably several, of the above in a carrier oil. then remember it works on smell - you need to use lots and reapply very very often.

discuss your wish to avoid chemicals with your obstretician. dengue and malaria could affect your baby more than DEET.

Bon jou megf218,

Your visit at the end of May (no?) is, also, at the end of Dry Season.

While there will be mosquitos, chances are there won't be the Aedes Egypti Mosquito, carrier of Dengue.

Caribbean Blue offers DEET-Free Mosquito Repellant www.gocaribbeanblue.com

AND

Eden Herbs offers a DEET-Free Citronella Cream Mosquito Repellant www.edenherbs.com

Both brands are locally-produced and widely available at Super J's Supermarkets, Pharmacies/Drug Stores & Specialty Boutiques on island

OR you can make your own...

Cutter Advanced contains picardin, an alternative to DEET. I find it to be very effective (DEET makes me itch, so I had to find something else.) However, it is not a natural product.

But we have been to St Lucia several times, and I don't remember that we used insect repellant very often. We stay at the Windjammer, and I know they keep the mosquitos under control very well.

Bon jou tout moun,

Many hotels/resorts in St. Lucia provide mosquito netting, anti-mosquito coils to burn, regularly spray your room & bed and blanket fog the property during the Rainy/Hurricane Season. Unfortunately, many of these chemical substances are even more toxic and contribute to loss of beneficial insects (bees, butterflies), geckos, bats & birds...

1] i am aware that there has not been a recorded case of malaria in recent times. however, there have been cases in the caribbean, [haiti, dom. rep and jamaica] within the last ten years, in places not generally regarded as a risk.

2] mosquito coils, which are burned to ward off mosquitos, may be hazardous to an unborn child, due to inhalation of smoke by the mother.

if at all concerned about any health issues, please consult your doctor or specialist and not an internet travel site!

Incognito Mosquito Repellant is excellant and Deet free!

I have been using this product for the past year.

I suffer from bad reactions to mossie bites and this has worked great for me in Barbados and Maldives.

I am off to the Maldives again on Sunday for 3 weeks and will be back in St. Lucia in November.

Hi,

All Terrain offers a very effective DEET-free insect repellent called Herbal Armor. It is available at many Whole Foods, Amazon.com, and allterrainco.com.

Safe travels & congratulations on your pregnancy!

Thank you everyone for your ideas!

I feel better knowing that we are traveling at a time when it is less likely to contract dengue.

I have consulted with my OB and she said that although there is research showing that DEET does not negatively impact the fetus, she feels uncomfortable with me using products with DEET. I have also read that taking vitamin B1 for a month before travel can help. I think I will try that too.
