Hotel Emeraude Plage vs. Hotel Le Village St. Jean

Anyone stayed at both places? Which do you prefer for the price? or if you have another suggestion, that would be great.

My husband and I are planning a birthday vacation in Anguilla and St. Barths in May.

Top Priorities are: Beach, pool, close to restaurants and bars, and nice as possible for less than $500 per night.

Is St. Jean the best area to stay for what we want?

Location does not really matter in Saint Barth, as everything is a 5 to 10 mins drive away. Saint Jean is the busiest beach. But Flammands, grand cul de sac, are nice also and have hotels on them.

For the same price, I think I would go Emeraude plage, because it is on the beach. Village Saint Jean is very nice also but up on the hill. This means nice views but no beach. Emeraude plage also allows you to walk to a several restaurants. Village Saint Jean is technically walkable, but the hill is so steep that you would never do it.

Emeraude plage does not have a pool. VSJ does have a small pool, but no pool scene. If by pool you want the pool scene, try christopher hotel (not on a beach but overlooking the sea), guanahani, isle de france or sereno.

If by pool scene, you mean pool bar, yeah, that would be awesome. But we are not looking for the Miami dance club at the pool scene, or MTV beach house.

We would love to be able to walk to some beach bar/shacks and have some drinks and eat lunch/dinner on the beach. Do all the beaches you mention have this, or mostly St. Jean?

All of them have it.

In st jean: nikki beach, eden rock, la plage restaurants

in flammands: Isle de France restaurant, Taiwana restaurant

In grand cul de sac: sereno restaurant, la gloriette, one or two more

St Jean is the most lively, the others more quiet. Nothing like Miami at either place.

Please rent a car as the coolest beaches in Saint Barth have no hotels nor any other facilities on them whatsoever. you'll want to sample those as well.

I think Saint Jean is a good choice for a first trip, but other beaches are equally fine as well.

<<We would love to be able to walk to some beach bar/shacks>>

Shacks? Darling? Shacks? this is St Barts cherie, one would call it a Paillotte..

Seriously, the VSJ is the nicer hotel but the Emeraude Plage has the beach, as pointed out, no pool.

St Jean would be the place for the beach scene.

The island is so small that it doesn't really matter where you stay.

Look at villas, that is where most of the accommodation on St Barts is...

Oh! I'm a fool. Try Les Ondines in Cul de Sac, no pool, but you have the Guanahani, Sereno hotels nearby, the O'Corail and Cocoloba "shacks" also.

Or should i just spend $$ and stay at Eden Rock?!

We are going to Anguilla first, so we can be beach bums there...maybe we should splurge a bit on the 2nd part of our trip?

Agree with all the info/advice above (including the spelling of Flamands....guilty as charged...) St Jean is a great location for a first time visit as it is very centrally located and convenient to many things (shops, restaurants.) The beach is the most "scene-y" but as Jim notes, this is St Barth, not MIami. Absolutely NO way you'll find MTV beach house LOL!

None of the hotels on St Jean have a pool (unless you completely splash our for one of the Eden Rock villas that have a private pool) so if that is a must you should consider Isle de France (Flamands), Guanahani or Sereno (Grand Cul de Sac) as beach options. As noted, the Christopher has a lovely pool, ocean views but no beach. The VSJ also has a pool.

You could do as Jim suggests and consider a villa (wait til you see the options there.....LOTS of choice) and go super high end hotel on Anguilla instead. Check out the above suggestions and come back with more questions.

Oh, and NO MATTER where you stay, you need a car!

It's hard to tell if Eden Rock is worth the money for you, but it is definitely a step above Emeraude plage. You will love it.
