Girls Trip

Where is the best spot on St. Barths for three 30 year old females looking for a lively pool / beach / bar scene? We want to be within walking distance to the happenings. We'll be on the island Mid May. Please advise, thanks!

My experience has been that St Barts is more of a "couples" destintion....but sounds like you are describing Nikki Beach in St Jean.

St Barth is for everyone, couples, families and singles. I think its a great place for a girls trip because its safe, small and has lots of shopping, dining and beaches.

It sounds like you should stay in the St Jean area. There are a number of hotels, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Hotel choices include the Eden Rock, Emeraude Plage, Tom Beach and Les Islets de la Plage on the beach or Village St Barth and Tropical Hotel, on the hill above. Tom Beach has the liveliest atmosphere of these choices. None have a great pool though.

Note that this is not a resort-centric island and you will want to rent a car to visit all the great beaches, hit Gustavia for drinks, shopping and people watching, etc.

Thank you both.

Can you clarify the difference between staying in Gustavia or St. Jean?

Is Tom's Beach within walking distance of restaurants / any nightlife?

Gustavia is the largest town on St Barth. The quay is located there. Plenty of shopping, bars and restaurants but no great beach. Its a wonderful place for lunch or to spend the evening. There are several places here for night life.

St Jean is the next largest town, on St Jean Beach, where the airport is located. It also has a number of shops and restaurants. Tom Beach Hotel is on St Jean Beach, as is Nikki Beach, a restaurant mentioned by datthecoast. There really isn't much nightlife in St Jean.

The most well-known place for nightlife is Le Ti St Barth in Point Milou.

As I said before, you really need to rent a car to enjoy the island, which is only 8 square miles. There are great beaches, restaurants and things to do everywhere. You really miss what St Barth is about if you don't get away from your hotel area and explore.

As mamiesgirl suggested, you really need a car to get around. Le Ti St Barth is a terrific "dance on the tables" place, but it is in a remote location.

I am a big fan of St Jean Beach area. On that beach you have numerous establishments with activity such as Nikki Beach, LaPlage and the Sand Bar. Additionally, there is quite a bit of shopping located right in that area between the stores by the airport and over by Village Creole. Once you are ready for a change you can take the 5 minute ride over to Gustavia for cocktails, shopping, people watching, etc. For nightlife the previouisly mentioned Le Ti St Barth is fun but it is by St Barts standards out of the way (10minutes away by car in a residential area). The same woman who owns Le Ti also owns a dance club in Gustavia called the yacht club and another place called Tam Art garden. Her webiste is www.caroleplaces.com . There was also a restuarant called the Strand which had a dance club but it is now known by a different name something like Big Burger. You will have a pretty good time on the beach if you want activity and stay close to Nikke Beach or La Plage.

We were just in St. Barts last week and Le Strand was the same and still has the Casa Nikki nightclub downstairs.

Bagatelle is another fun restaurant with dancing right on the water in Gustavia. It's next door to Baz Bar which has live bands and is a great place for cocktails.

Best hotel depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking to be pampered on the beach, have elegant meals, good people watching, but essentially hang with your friends, then stay and spend your time (and money) at Eden Rock.

If you are looking for a more social scene, meet other people, then you must spend your days at La Plage or Nikki Beach. You could do so while staying at Eden Rock, but it would be cheaper for you to stay at Emeraude plage or even the smaller Tom Beach Hotel (the hotel that hosts La Plage).

Christopher may also work for you. There is no beach scene there (no beach, only rocks) but it is the only hotel with a real pool scene. Rather quiet and popular with families though.
