Please provide a Vieques Ferry Overview (I'm a novice)

Could someone provide me with an overview of the Ferry system to Vieques? Where could I find a schedule/reserve tickets, etc.? Also, my main concern is that we're staying on the main island for awhile and will be driving our rental car to Farjado to get on the Ferry. Is there a place to leave our rental car in Farjado? If so, is it safe to do so? I'm confused by the whole thing...

Thanks for your input!

We just took the ferry back and forth - 2 adults and 3 kids under 10. I would have to say it's a ordeal but not that bad - about like a day in the airport anymore. We bought our tickets a few hours early and drove around - looked for something to eat - NOT A LOT TO DO THAT WE SAW. Sat in one of the areas and waited til the boat docked - waited for the people to get off, waited for our turn in line - waited till everyone was on the boat. Then sat - sat for a while - Everyone had a different answer on how long it took - but it was closer to 1 1/2 hours (both ways). Then we waited till everyone got off. For the price ($20 round trip for family of 5) it was fine for us - however if it was just the two adults I would have flown. Also I am not sure if kids were cheaper or what is considered "special" for the shorter line - saw some with babies but not sure what age of kid is the cut off. Beware - locals are serious about getting in line and moving forward - my kids were almost run over a few times!

We just came back from a glorious week in Vieques. We flew in via VAL ... great flight!

To save money, with a party of 7, we decided to to take the Lancha back to Fajardo. OMG...what an experience!

I waited in line for 1 hour to get the ticket...and another hour to get on the boat, and 1 1/2 hours to get to Fajardo.

We were hearded into the boat like cattle. There was a lot of pushing and shoving until my son decided to "box out" our space! Then it started to rain.... hard! So everyone sat downstairs.

Once you got on the boat it was so hot! The air conditioning was on but you could hardly feel it.

I felt we wasted a lot of time that otherwise could have been spent one final time on a beach!

Hope you have a great time in Vieques!

Someone else on TA once said this about the ferry:

If you have more time than money, take the ferry.

If you have more money than time, take a plane.

That is basically it. One can't expect a glamorous cruise trip for the $2 ticket price. It is basic transportation that lots of people use for a basic price. It is not going to be the best part of the day, but you will eventually get to where you want to go.

I don't know if this comes too late. Attempts at calling to make reservations were utterly fruitless. However, and this applies tangentially, we took the ferry from Fajardo to Vieques back to Fajardo and then to Culebra. The hotel at which we stayed in Culebra bought our ferry tickets for us for all the legs of our journey. We had no problems. The lines do form early, and they were long, especially on the weekends.

can someone clarify what 'lining up early' means? one, two, three hours before departure? thank you

Things have changed a bit. One of the large boats is back in service as of last week. Also school starts in the next few days which cuts down on locals coming for day trips.

As of today, things look brighter if you are determined to "ferry".Of course it all depends on when you travel

You can take plane to Vieques from San Juan International ( the most expensive) or from Isla grande (SIG) the smaller San Juan airport or a 12 minute flight from Fajardo ( the cheapest at about $23.00 each way). With a group you can also charter.

Is Vieques worth it? Travel and Leisure magazine readers just awarded it the best tropical Island in the Caribbean or Bahamas and you are asking on the Vieques forum, yes, I and most people on this forum love Vieques, but it all depends on you, and what you think is worth doing.

Don't come for the Golf, the casinos or the shopping, you will be disappointed. Come for the beaches, the scenery, the people and the best Bio Bay in the world according to the Guinness book of records.
