Traffic control operation in El Yunque for holiday weekend

From the folks in El Yunque National Forest ...

There will be a stand-by traffic control operation in effect for the upcoming Easter holiday weekend from April 6-8 in anticipation of high visitation and parking congestion in El Yunque. Please be aware that parking in some areas of the Forest may be limited or become full.

In addition, please note that the La Mina Trail from Palo Colorado Recreation area to La Mina Falls is currently closed until further notice due to unsafe conditions resulting from last week's heavy rains and flooding conditions.

El Yunque National Forest hosts more than 1 million visitors each year and one of the historically busiest visitation periods is during spring break and Holy Week. With high visitation to the Forest expected for the first week of April, Forest Supervisor Pablo Cruz has initiated a Traffic Control Operation to be in effective as needed from Friday April 6 through Sunday April 8 as a way to help manage anticipated high visitation and limited parking.

The El Yunque Traffic Control Operation consists of various steps designed to manage traffic and parking problems, protect El Yunque’s natural resources and ensure that visitors have a safe visit to the Forest. This includes such measures as providing up-to-the-minute Forest traffic information on electronic signs strategically located in PR-3 and PR-191, a vehicle “Check Point” at the entrance to the forest, implementing temporary Forest closures and offering alternate road routing instructions to visitors when overflow occurs.

“The Traffic Control Operation plan serves to alleviate peak-season traffic problems and help to ensure visitor safety,” said Pablo Cruz. “We will also be using traffic control operations during the upcoming busy summer months to help manage traffic and parking issues in the Forest.”
