Tips for two girls traveling to San Juan, PR?

My cousin and I are taking a trip to San Juan for a week. It will just be the two of us, and we're a bit wary of traveling alone. I've heard nothing but great things about Puerto Rico, and I'm not extremely worried. But do you have any tips/advice for us besides the usual common sense stuff? We are both 22 and our reservations are at the San Juan Beach Hotel. We plan on having a quiet, low key vacation, with the occasional bar outing. Thanks!

That hotel is not rated very well and the beach there is not very nice and is unswimmable. San Juan is not a low-key quiet area.

By low-key, i simply meant we won't be looking to plan multiple activities or anything like that. We certainly want to enjoy the excitement and nightlife of san juan though. But you're correct about the beach.

I understand. Some people are surprised when they get to Puerto Rico and find that the Metro San Juan area is huge with well over 2.1 million people and large city problems like traffic congestion and crime.

Hi Elle, I'd suggest relocating to either La Concha or the El San Juan. Both have excellent onsite nightlife. So you can go check out other venues, but return to the hotel to party late ( as is the custom in San Juan) and take the elevator home.

My guess is that you choose the San Juan Beach Hotel because it is cheap. Suggested for you were the El San Juan and La concha which are anything but cheap. My suggestion is that you bid on Priceline for a resort in the San Juan Isla verde area, In our last 4 bids we have gotten the Marriott Stellaris twice and the Caribe Hilton twice.

As mentioned before, the San Juan beach hotel is not the best. If you booked due to price, I would recommend the newly opened Condado Palm Inn. It is a Best Western. It is in the same area, across from the Marriott, and just one block from the beach. The hotel was completely remodelled and looks very nice. There also in the top 10 here on TA. Here's a link to their site. Hope this helps

FYI -- The hotel sbenus recommeded above is the one we ended up choosing for the two nights before our cruise. For our budget and area preferences (wanted a nice area we would enjoy that is walking distance to beach / resturants, etc.), this one looked like a good value for the area. Reviews are good on tripadvisor too. It's right in the great Condado area which is fun and popular.

Unfortunately our reservations aren't refundable, but I think we can make do with the hotel. I'm looking for info more on the safety side ---- is it safe to take taxis here, are there parts of town we should avoid, etc. thanks!

Just came back from P.R. One of the folks we met suggested we stay away from La Perla. Had no problems as far as security issues but we were generally back to the resort in Humacao by 10pm or so. We enjoyed the Bacardi tour which is nearby San Juan. Both forts in Old San Juan were worth the visit if you're into history. There is a free trolley that circles the city. Actually I believe there are three trollies with different routes. There is a visitor center in Old San Juan where you can obtain info. Good luck!

I stayed at The Beach House Hotel with my sister and another friend 2yrs ago for a long wkend, the hotel was blah but they had beds on the beach which made up for everything...we had drinks on the beach, in our beds, walked the strip in Isla Verde, went to the casino in one of the hotels in the day, went back that night to party, took the bus to old San Juan, took the ferry to the Bacardi Rum Factory, went to the Mall and spent another day in Pinones...It was my best adult vacation, not to mention it was my birthday...You will have fun trust me, the only thing I didnt get to do which I regret is go to El Yunque because we didnt have a car (which is easy to get, now I know). I am going back this mothers day with my mom for the weekend.
