Post Cruise: Old San Juan vs El Yunque

My husband & I will end our cruise with Celebrity Cruise in San Juan at 8am on Saturday, October 27. Our flight is not until 7:25pm. We want to see OSJ and El Yunque, but we know that that is not possible with just one day.

Which one would you do if you had only one day?

If we do OSJ, we would store our luggage at Barrachina then walk and sight see in OSJ. Can we walk to OSJ from cruise terminal or must we take a taxi, if so how much does it cost?

If we do El Yunque, should we rent a car at the airport or take a tour bus. How do we get to the airport to pick up a rental? What rain forest tour company do you recommend?

Thank you so much!

"Can we walk to OSJ from cruise terminal or must we take a taxi, if so how much does it cost?"

Celebrity docks at the other side of the bay, not across the street as Carnival does. It's not far from Old San Juan, but it's not walkable with luggage. You will need a taxi ride. The rates are set by zone. Check this website for prices: www.cabspr.com/.

"If we do El Yunque, should we rent a car at the airport or take a tour bus."

Personally, I would rent a car. It's much cheaper than a tour. Check this website for available tours: http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/

"How do we get to the airport to pick up a rental?"

Taxi.

I don't think you have enough time for El Yunque. You will not be out of the cruise until 9:30-10am. You need to be at the airport by 5pm. Give yourself an hour each for pick up and drop off of rental. Plus 2hrs round trip.

OSJ is your best bet. You will have enough time to walk around, have a nice lunch, see the sights and do some shopping.

Hi

We are arriving pre cruise the day before joining Celebrity on 24 November 2012, and would like to go to the Outlet village. Any tips on getting there? We note that we would have to have a taxi from the airport to the cruise terminal on the Saturday morning - should we take a taxi to the outlets too? We also have a full day before flying home so wonder if there is an Island bus tour?

There are 2 outlet malls, the one in Barceloneta has more stores. A cab will be expensive, as the mall is 45mins away. Check cabspr.com for pricing.

There are a few outlet stores in OSJ (RL, Coach, TH, Guess, Custo Barcelona, Dooney) and a Marshalls.

No island bus tours here, as PR is pretty big.

There is also the Belz Outlet Mall in Canovanas. Fairly good size but not as big as Barceloneta. Its advantage to Belz is that it is only 10-20 minutes from the airport. Barceloneta is 45 minutes from side of San Juan and more like an hour to an hour and a half from the airport considering the very heavy cross town traffic.

El Yunque is great but you will be pressed on time. It's about an hour each way plus you'll want a couple of hours or more there, depending upon how much hiking you want to do. The popular La Mina Falls walk in El Yunque takes 1 hour round trip, up and down a steep trail with many concrete steps, and you'll want to spend some time for swimming and photos in the waterfall.

Old San Juan is a great place to spend the day. Start your day near the bus sstation & cruise ship dock. Pick up a free city map at the Starbucks there and pick your favorite spots and then meander your way to each of them. Lots of beautiful statues, the city wall, churches, historic homes, and del Morro fort and cemetary. The fort will take a couple of hours. Great day.
