Where to buy vejigante masks

My husband and I are leaving for Puerto Rico (San Juan, El Yunque, Arecibo, Vieques) tomorrow and would love to buy a vejigante mask as a souvenir. Where, out of these places we plan to visit, can we buy a unique one for a reasonable price?

You can find them in some stores in Old San Juan. They are easier to find in Ponce, but you are not visiting that area.

nytoparis is correct. There's a store in Ponce, right in front of the old firehouse that not only sells these masks, but also all kinds of souvenirs at reasonable prices.

There is a store on Cristo Street in OSJ, as well as Forteleza Street.

Thanks for those suggestions. We will look in Old San Juan. We also want to buy some paintings made by local artists, and we were told by some friends that Cristo and Forteleza are good spots for that too. Any other spots we should visit where we can watch local artists at work and buy some art? I read that El Yunque is good for art too, any recommendations about where exactly? We are going to be doing some hikes in the rainforest there.

Since you are going to El Yunque, stop on the way at a store called Coqui International in Palmer on the same road that leads to El Yunque. The store will be at steps past the Post office on your right side.

Another place to buy them is where they make them, at the town of Loiza at the store of the Castor Ayala family.

There are at least 3 different types of masks. Those of the towns of Loiza, Ponce & Hatillo.

The authentic Loiza vegigante masks are made with dry coconuts or "higueras" (the same plant fruit used to make maracas), while the authentic ones from Ponce, are made from papier-mache. While the masks from the town of Hatillo are made with wire mesh. All of them have their special charm.

On Road # 184 on the way to Guavate you will also find someone carving

Pilones out of wood . You will see it right of the street, there is a hugh one on the side.

The places described above will be much more reasonable than the Old San Juan shops which cater to tourists off of the cruise ships.
