1st time visitor

Want to go to PR end of October for the 1st time. Can anyone suggest a great beach to stay at? We don't want an all inclusive. We would like small cabana type place on a good swimming beach - where should we look? We want to eat like a local. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Look into Dorado. My co-worker is from PR and says it's nicer than all of the other cities.

Dorado is located outside of San Juan (about 20 minutes without traffic, a lot longer with traffic). You will need a car to get there.

If this is your frist time, I strongly recomment that you stay in San Juan. Isla Verde, which is a 5 minutes drive from both the airport and Condado, and 15 minutes from Old San Juan, has the best beach in the San Juan area. Intercontinental and El San Juan are both on the beach and have nice pools. You won't need a rental car if you stay in San Juan.

For local food, try Bebo's near Condado, and La Bombonera and Cafe Manolin both in Old San Juan. All three offer delicious authentic food at good prices.

Rincon is another sweet location w/ beautiful beaches. There are a couple resort type hotels or smaller charming inns. You'll have to rent a car from the San juan airport though - its nearly 2hrs west of San Juan.

There is a second international airport in Puerto Rico (Aeropuerto Rafael Hernández located in Aguadilla) and it is located in the western region of the country. It is very close to Rincón, you do not need to travel to San Juan and drive hours, you can simply travel directly to the west coast and save money and driving time.
