How safe is San Juan?

My 9-month old baby and I will be accompanying my husband on a business trip to San Juan. I was hoping we would stay at a hotel within walking distance of shops/sights since my husband will be working most of the days that we'll be there (we're still not sure where we're staying), but when I mentioned this to my husband, he said he didn't want us to leave the hotel without him, even during the day.

We've been there once, but only for about 8 hours (port of call on a cruise), and it seemed ok to me. Is he being paranoid? Or is it more dangerous than I assumed?

It's just like any major city - use common sense - stay in the main tourist areas and you should not have any problems.

If you plan on checking out Old SJ take a look at the map to see where the major attractions are

if you are looking for ideas for a walking tour check this out visit-the-coqui.com/2008/…

you could also do a carriage ride or even a segway tour

have a great time

The Old San Juan is perfectly safe during the day. There's a lot of people walking around for work, leisure, etc. Pick-pocketing is really not a problem in PR. You and your baby should be fine.

At night however, you may want to use a little more caution like you generally would when walking around anywhere else. Your hubby can relax.

Enjoy!

I agree, your husband is being a bit paranoid. It is natural that he would feel uncomfortable with having the two of you out and about alone in a new city with a bad reputation.

But honestly, it is not as dangerous as it has been made out to be. San Juan is like any other city, as long as you dont forget your street smarts you will be fine. But the tourist areas you will be in (Condado, Isla Verde, and Old San Juan) are even safer.

So tell your husband to relax a bit and not expect you to do nothing all day long. It is fine to walk about.

Sorry, he is being paranoid to the extremes! You'll be safe. There is a lot of police presence. Crime in PR is not tourist related. As long a you are street savvy, you and your baby will be ok. There is no use to visit the island if you have to stay confined to your hotel...

I think one of the major factors will be which hotel are you staying at. The larger resorts will have everything you want and you may not want to leave.

What do you think about the Caribe Hilton?

Stayed there several times. Very nice. It is a resort, with everything you need but Golf. They have a private beach, a man made cove. In a safe area, just a short walk over the Condado Lagoon bridge to the Condado Plaza and Casino. Probably the largest balconies of the San Juan Hotels. You should like it.

Just to qualify PRBob's reply to GonePeteTong's question about the Caribe Hilton: it is indeed an extremely nice hotel but last time I was there it was undergoing MAJOR renovations. Probably good to check how far along they have come.

On a personal preference, I would add El San Juan Hotel among places to consider in San Juan itself.
