The Westin? They have been - and still are- under construction of a new building right by the "villas" in front of the sea golf course! Maybe that's what they are referring to. The last villas and apartments already there were finished about 2-3 years ago and the Spa was renovated 2 years ago. There is a lot of construction going on also on the house's area. Spectacular -over 3-4 millon mediterranean style houses.

Oops... it was in the newspapers that Wyndham was in conversation to acquire Westin RM, perhaps that's what they are referring, but there is not a new/different hotel being constructed at the Rio Mar premises.

I just called and the Wyndham is buying the Westin. So some time in May, it will now be the Wyndham. They plan on doing a lot of renovations. We were hoping to use Starwood points towards a stay there, but I guess that won't happen.

I could still book under the Westin site, but we don't know for sure that we'll go.

In today's Chicago Tribune travel section, there was an ad from Wyndham announcing their new Rio Mar property in Puerto Rico...so the sale must have closed already.

Wynham bought about 50% of the resort and has rented the hotel for 20 years so it turned from a Westin to a Wyndham in May 07. They are renovating, but it is minor. The locals are very concerned about the plans to eliminate the landmark 13 har-thru tennis courts to overbuild the resort with time share units. They are also seeking government permission to increase the resort's capabilities for construction. We live in San Juan but sponsor the resort frequently. They are also expanding the casino, which was already huge. I just hope they don't spoil Rio Mar's charm for profit's sake!!!! Anyway, I would go now before all that happens. The beach is not the best in the area, but it is nice. The resort needs more ammenities, specially for recreation and sports, not less, like the new owners seem to think; not many water sports, they eliminated the basketball court, and, as I said, will eliminate the tennis courts. It looks like they are shifting away from a family oriented resort to a more adult, casino-restaurants-golf & high-end activities' resort. Pity!
