Hi Carole,

I don't know much about the RIU chain of resorts, but don't they include airport transfers in your booking? Most resorts on the island include that, so check with your travel agent first.

You definitely don't want to rent a car, especially as a first timer to the island. Once you get there and see how fast they drive (not to mention the difficulties Americans face trying to learn to drive on the left side of the road), you'll be glad you didn't rent a car.

If your transfers aren't included in your package, there are a number of options for you to get to the hotel. You can arrange a shuttle transport through JUTA tours at the airport, take a private taxi from the airport, BUT agree on a price before you get in. It's roughly two hours from the airport in MoBay to Ocho Rios, but might be a bit less going to the new RIU since it sits about ten minutes outside the city of Ocho Rios. Gas prices are rising in Jamaica just like everywhere else, so a private taxi (only take one that has red license plates as these are officially licensed taxis) might run you $50 or so for two people one way. Others here on the forums might be able to give you other alternatives for transportation and costs.

Since this is your first time to Jamaica, you must climb Dunns River Falls (touristy, but a must do for everyone at least once in Jamaica). Don't be put off by the craft market at the top of the Falls. Jamaican vendors (especially this particular group of vendors) are VERY persistent with their sales pitches and it can be hard to handle for newcomers. Just politely say no thanks and keep moving if you're not interested in what they're selling.

There are loads of things to see and do in the Ochi area. Read through the posts here on Trip Advisor to get some ideas of what interests you. I'm sure the hotel will have some organized tours available, but if you like to go at your own pace consider hiring a private driver for the day or part of a day. Again, agree on the price before setting off. Carolyn Barrett of Barrett Adventures seems to get some good reviews here. Try doing a web search on her for her email address.

Just curious --- are you from Dousman, Wisconsin?

Good luck and ENJOY your first trip to Jamaica! : )
