Montego Bay & RDMB questions..

Leaving for RDMB on 8/22 for a MERE 4 days/3 nights with my best friend. We've never been to Jamaica and already feel as though this is going to become a yearly event! I have a few questions that I thought I'd ask some more "experienced" Jamaica travellers so that we can get the most out of our little time there..

1) Has anyone ever done the Chukka Blue river tubing? Any thoughts? Was it worth the price?

2) I think I read somewhere that the swimming pools at RDMB close at 5 or 6pm.. true?

3) How deep is the ocean water off of the retaining wall that they have? I think I read that there was a ladder going into the water from there, but I don't remember anyone saying just how deep the water was.

4) As far as money, credit card to pay for tours at the hotel & souveniers at Margaritaville, USD for street vendors in small bills.. am I correct?

5) Is there a shuttle from Margaritaville back to RDMB after dark? I know it's so close walking distance, but I thought I'd check.

6) Can we bring rum back home and what are the limits? Best place to buy?

7) Taxi recommendations for a day tour? I'm hesitant to pick up any Joe-taxi on the street. And unsure of good places to go, so someone pleasant who would like to show us around would be nice. And how much ballpark do they charge?

Ok, that's enough for right now.. I'm sure I could think of more but I'll start with this!

I can't wait!!

1. Re: Montego Bay & RDMB questions..

Hi Michelle,

We just returned from RDMB on 7/27. (This was our 4th trip to Jamaica. We love it.)

1) Sorry. We haven't done the tubing, but I think my favorite excursion has been the booze cruise/snorkeling/Dunn's River Falls trip via catarmaran (party boat, mon)

2) The swimming pools open at 9:00 am and close are 5:00, though they didn't seem to bother the few who started early or stayed later. The pool bar opens at 10:00 closes at 5:00

3) The water off the retaining was is very deep (not sure). There is a ladder but you have to swim to the trampolines. However, there are also 2 swimming beaches for wading, snorkeling, swimming, etc. Use some bread from the buffet for snorkeling. . .great fun.

4) You can use credit card for tours and gifts at the hotel and/or Margaritaville. Yes, take smaller bills for shopping in town.

5) You can walk to Margaritaville easily in the daytime. (My hubby and I did at least 2 or 3 times for beers and then lunch. Have the jerk shrimp. yummy.) I don't know if I would walk it after dark, unless you have a really large group. There is a shuttle or taxis. I think either Monday or Tuesday night is Decameron night at Margaritaville, and the staff goes with the group. We went by there at 4:30 am Saturday night when we left Sumfest, and the place was still jamming.

6) I believe each adult over 21 can bring back 1 litre. Don't overlook the rum cream too. (Very good. . .like Bailey's.) I think the cheapest place to buy is at the airport, plus you don't have to lug it around as much. They also pack the bottles in great, easy to carry cartons. You'll likely have plenty of time to shop before your return flight leaves, so look for the "Jamaica Farewell" signs in the airport.

7) Ask for Zip at the guard house in front of the hotel. Tell him where you want to go and agree on a price. He'll likely take you 2 or 3 places Rose Hall, Halfmoon beach, and shopping for $30 or so. Nice guy.

Have fun. It's a nice small, laid back hotel. You'll love it. Don't let little things eat at you. Their maintenance team, entertainment and bartending crews are great. If you need something, just ask.

1) Yeah we went on the Chukka Blue zipline and the tubing tour in April 2005. The zipline was way cool but the tubing tour was just ok. The water is fairly shallow and slow moving. The guide hooks up 6 tubes and pulls you down the stream. We had fun but probably wouldnt do the tubing again (definatly doing the zipline again). There are 2 Chukka offices in Jamaica - One in Montego Bay and one over by Ochi Rios. We used the one in Montego Bay...I think Chukka Blue is the Ochi Rios one....at work sorry and I cant remember off the top of my head.

3) Pretty deep, 10-15 feet or so right off the dock.

4) You got it. There is also a nice little craft market near RDMB. Exit hotel, turn right, 1/2 block up on the other side of the street is a small stripmall and in the middle is a walkway that leads behind to some craft vendors. Remember to bargain!

5) Not that we saw but the guard at the gate can get ya a cab.

7) We paid about $140.00 for a full day of taxi services. We went all over the west end starting at 9am and getting back to RDMB around 11pm. There are a lot of good cab drivers but make sure its a JUTA cab (they are properly insured ;) )

Enjoy your stay,

-Reby

A couple things I can help you with.

1. Buy your alcohol at the airport, it's duty free.

2. Hire Joseph from the Royal Decameron to take you where you need to go. Just ask Security to get him for you. He's a great driver, very safe, and very informative.

3. Next to the Coral Cliff's Casino you can also hire taxi drivers.

I second the recommendation to buy the rum (and rum cream!) at the airport - its also one less thing to carry through checkin and security.

We also had Zipp for a driver, and liked him. I also highly recommend Linford, who drove us from RDMB to Round Hill (we split our accommodations so we could try 2 places). We liked him so much we hired him to take us to and from Sumfest every night, and from Round Hill to the airport - he was always on time and his prices are very reasonable. He is based out of RDMB, and I wished we had discovered him earlier to do a day tour!

Enjoy RDMB - we did - trip report soon come! Mary and Pat, I'm sorry we didn't get to meet you - Wednesday was our last day at RDMB, and we spent it shopping, snorkeling, and we also went to Doctor's Cave - we ended up not going to Rockers night at Sumfest, but we did go to the big 3 nights and had such a wonderful time we are already planning for Sumfest next year!

It's about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half, depends on who is driving...
