ok Punta cana to relax and the most gorgeous beach you will ever see. there is no town nearby, but there are a few shopping plazas for souvenirs. Resorts can be found to entertain the adults and teens alike. Turquoise water, white powdery sand (almost all resorts)

Puerto Plata, is in a town area. there were lots of places to see. the landscape is less flat as PC also. Now the beaches. they are a dark grainy sand and the water was not super impressive. If this is important to you, you want a great beach, POP is not for you.

Mayan riviera compares more to PC than POP.

There is an area called Cabarete which is known for kite surfing. I hear it is a more active area. Haven't been. beaches are nicer than POP.

LaRomana is another area, on the caribbean side of the DR. It has its advantages. for various reasons.

Kaki can fill you in more. She is off to PC near the end of the week at Sunscape the beach, she loves sunscape Casa Del Mar in LaRomana.
