if you had to choose, which barcelo is the best?
I stayed there a couple of years ago and at that time, it was the Palace - you can use restaurants, etc at all others in the complex, but, they can't use the Palace. We enjoyed it alot - loved the beach, the rooms were a bit musty as are most humid destinations, but, we liked it alot.
Don't go to the Barcelo Premium Punta Cana (formerly Breezes). It's not even part of the Barcelo complex.
The food was the worst, room had too many issues to mention, the service was the worst, and everything was very unprofessional. I had to move resorts mid-week.
I'hve been to Punta cana twice and i can say to you, if you choose a barcelo cie tour are in good hand.My preference if you want a good vacation withthout spending a lot of money, you can stay at the Bavaro beach or garden .You are just beside of the bavaro palace and it cost less because the hotel are older, but it clean, and it serve the same food at the beach or garden then the palace hotel. The difference it the hotel palace it younger and your are a difference for the a la carte restaurant. Have a good vacation, and me i will try another hotel february the 4th, a small hotel 3 star tropical bavaro club. I'v never been at this hotel, but i'm going to try a small hotel ,cheaper,I will see!!!
ZAZA, Montreal ,canada
I'm staying at the Barcelo Punta Cana.. i see you had a bad experience with this resort... is there anything you could sugest to me to make my vacation better?
Six of us are staying at Barcelo Bavaro Caribe in Feb. I've talked with quite a few who have been there and they all enjoyed it. Debbie's has a travel forum about the east coast in Dominican and there are lots who have been to the Barcelos and really enjoyed them. We don't ever go 5* resorts so our crew will be happy as can be, we're not fussy and the beach sounds incredible there!! (We also got a very good deal)
I'm going to enjoy this resort no matter what the conditions of it is in
beer, rum, beautiful beach and beautiful people, that's all i need to make a great holiday!!
I'm a low-maintenance traveler and would prefer to stay at a 3* property with great service to a 5 or 6* property with poor service. I went there with an open-mind because there were a lot of bad reviews, but I know that people tend to have Ritz Carlton expectations when paying Holiday Inn prices. Well, I paid a good amount for this resort (more than some of the very nice properties) and I was in for a real surprise. I stayed Dec. 17-24. Upon arrival, I was the only one checking in and the front staff was very rude and unfriendly. They kept insisting that I needed some sort of transfer from my rep, but no one could locate my rep in 3 days (yet, I continued to be harrassed by the hotel for the transfer). They sent me to my room without any direction and it was sort of complicated to find (room 6215..I think, which was in bldg. 4...how would I have guessed that?). When I finally got to my room, the door lock and safe lock were broken. Throughout my stay, I reported the issue 3 times and it never got rectified. I had to carry my belongings with me everwhere, which was not fun! I was alone and always had to keep them with me. There was literally a trickle of water from the shower head and there was never any hot water. I literally froze while trying to shower and it took a long time too. The walls were super thin and the person in the room next to me had Whooping Cough or something. I listened to it non-stop. There was always a lot of talking going on in the surrounding rooms, which was very anoying. I felt like they were sitting in my room (and this happened very early in the morning). The food at the main buffet was absolutely the worst. I am not a picky eater at all. However, if it wasn't for the buffet near the pool, I would have gone hungry. The bartenders at the lobby bars were very unfriendly and unattentive....they chose who they would serve and when. They served alcohol to minors (and I'm talking about 13, 14 year olds). Also, the drinks were not good. I mostly drank Diet Coke the entire time. People I met did not like the drinks either...the Daquiris were too strong and made with a slush machine, not real fruit. Everyone complained about the Bloody Mary's being way too spicy. There were also a ton of people who got very sick from the food. There is a huge number of reps who work throughout Punta Cana at the different resorts who happen to live at this resort. In the evening, they are allowed to mingle with the guests (and they are not in uniform), which means that they annoyingly hit on everyone non-stop. In all of my travels, I have never once experienced this and it was extremely unprofessional. The evenings are quite boring. They really lack entertainment...they have one evening show, but that's about it. Luckily, I switched hotels mid-week and saved the rest of my vacation! On my last morning there as I was showering, the water/power went out and I had to finish washing with bottled water. When I went to check out, they weren't going to allow me to because the power was out. I told them that I didn't owe them anything and I left. Best move I ever made.
I know this is a little late, 11 months since we went, but I thought I’d post it anyway.
I’m curious to see if anyone has had similar experiences at the Palace.
We stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace in Punta Cana last year during Valentine Week.
We had booked the Barcelo Beach but they were over booked. They tried to move us to the Caribe, but I dug my feet in and got us upgraded to the Palace.
I’m usually pretty “go with the flow” but I was upset that they didn’t talk to us. We arrived on an evening flight so it was about 11:00pm when we checked in. I was tired and a little cranky. They made us stand at the counter for an hour and wouldn’t answer any questions. Then they gave our paperwork to a porter and told us to “go with him”. When I asked where we were going, I was told “Caribe…….it’s all the same”. I decided that if it’s “all the same” then I would go to the Palace.
Long story short…a lot of glaring between me and the girl behind the counter….and we were upgraded, along with our friends and a couple that just happened to be standing beside me.
I guess the Palace was not expecting guests that night, because they had a little trouble finding us suitable rooms.
The first room they gave us had no door handle. The couple that got upgraded with us were taken to an occupied room, but things were ironed out in short order.
Having said all of that, the Palace was really nice, well worth the rocky start.
The rooms were clean, everything worked and the cleaning staff were friendly and very good at their jobs.
The beach and pool were great, lots of chairs and shade. The staff were friendly and fluent in English. The drinks were an adventure, I had 4 margaritas and everyone tasted completely different. The food at the beach grill was amazing. There was fresh fish/mussels, steak, pizza and more. The fries tasted like fries (sounds like a little thing, but if you’ve traveled to the Caribbean you know what I mean).
The a la carte restaurants were OK. The steakhouse ran out of sirloin steak the night we went, but hey, it’s a third world country. I had the beef medallions instead….poor me. :)
The buffet was the best I’ve ever had. You gotta try the pasta bar. Everything is fried but you’re on vacation, so go for it.
We went to the show every night and enjoyed it every time. You can tell that the entertainers love their jobs. The disco was great, played all the latest hits and stayed open till three. The train ride back from the disco was hilarious. How they manage to keep people from falling out is beyond me. If you’re over 5’10’, duck your head when getting into the train (trust me).
The lobby bar was the only negative. The service was spotty, bordering on pretty bad, even when not busy. The waitresses were not very friendly and just brought you any drink they felt like. I’m not kidding. We had a 50/50 chance of getting what we ordered. Tipping didn’t improve the service or their demeanour, so don’t bother. The same waitresses work the shows so it’s faster to get your own.
Would I go back? Definitely, if I got a good deal.
Sunworshipper, I'm sure the Palace was nicer than the new Barcelo Premium Punta Cana. They bought the former Breezes Superclub and are making some modifications (I hate to call them upgrades). It's not even located within the Barcelo complex and you don't have exchange priviliges, so I'm not sure why they call it "Premium." I think they figure they could say that because it has a trapeze and a rock climbing wall.
One of my friends is getting married at the Palace and staying there aswell, there is a big group, but at time of booking we could not afford it, if we were to stay at the Barcelo Beach would we still be able to hang out with everyone on the beach and by the pools at the Palace, I know we would not be able to eat at some of their restaurants but that is fine with me. Any comments on how it works in the complex?
