Punta Cana during Lent

I vaguely remember reading something years ago about liquor being banned island wide in the Dominicac during Lent. We are planning a early spring/late winter tropical vacation and we were considering Punta Cana this year. Does anyone know if there is any truth to the liquor ban? Does it apply to the resorts? Or am I mistaken?

Just to clarify...

Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.
