Make sure you check this before you go to Punta Cana. In Spain everyone is taking precautions.

Hi all - Going to Punta Cana

I was one of the most paranoid for taking the chloroquine - but I weighed out the possible side effects against the risks of malaria and I took my first pill last night (keep in mind that I will even avoid taking tylenol if I can help it.)

I will be consuming copious amounts of alcohol on my trip and am not too worried as I have spoken to qquite a few people who have partied while taking chloroquine.

Took the pill last night, with a big meal as suggested by many on this site. (It is a very bitter pill but just take it with milk, juice or soda - my boyfriend took it with water and he is a softy when it comes to pills) We both felt some very mild nausea, and had no problem with dreams (actually we agreed that ast night is probably one of the best sleeps we have had in months.) Today I feel about 95-99% of my regular self.

If you read the side effects of many other common medications you will find that the warnings are disconcerning but keep in mind that while some of these pills are not important to take - this one is - it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to have malaria.

I also spoke with a person who has contracted malaria - it happened 4 years ago in the Congo and she is still feeling the side-effects now. Her answer to my question of whether on not to take the chloroquine was an emphatic "definately - don't risk it"

Hope this helps!

My family of 3 travelled to DR at Christmas, for the 3rd time. We did take the Chloroquine, felt a little nauseous after the first dose, but all the ones afterwards we were fine. We are returning, March 13th, can hardly wait. You have to take every precaution when going to another country, especially with the water. As long as you are careful, your vacation can be virtually worry free.
