Traveller's Cheques

Can you cash traveller's cheque in Punta Cana? If yes, where can you cash them?

Leave them at home, very hard to cash and if possible a rip off rate. Don't leave home with them.

howie2005:

Traveler's Checks are not recommended for use here. They are not widely accepted - especially by local vendors and taxi drivers - and they usually receive an unfavorable exchange rate. However, we've had no issues cashing smaller amounts at the front desk of the resorts and with proper ID, we have cashed larger amounts locally at Banco Popular branches and we've even used them without difficulty at the Hard Rock casino. We also have used them to make purchases at the large duty free shop in the departure terminal at the airport.

If you are even remotely considering using an ATM or credit card locally, be sure to let the issuing bank know in-advance that you will be here or the transaction will likely be declined as an anti-fraud precaution.

Hope this helps.

How about the Visa travelers cards that you can put money on. They are pretty much the replacements of travelers checks, can they be widely used?

So when we go what would you suggest? US dollars for the resorts or exchange money when we get there and use the Domincan money? Also for tipping which do the locals that work at the resorts prefer?
