Punta Canta vs. Puerta Plata

Hello,

I'm going to be 18 next summer and am graduating from high school. I am trying to decide where to go on my senior trip with my family of five, and a friend. I would like to play lots of golf, sit on the beaches or by the pool and drink, meet some women, gamble, and go out late at night. Which place do you think would be better for what I would be looking for and if you have any suggestions on resorts, which ones?

Ok, I have been to both, I was in my early 30's when I went to Puerto Plata (POP), so my vacation wish list was a bit different. Here is what the main things you need to know are, ok, close your eyes....what do you picture the beach like.......

Ok so POP has dark sand beaches and darker water, sort of like the Atlantic coast, where as Punta Cana (PUJ or PC as we call it here) has turquoise water and white or close to who're beaches on the most part. So in other words it is very tropical looking, like a picture postcard of a gorgeous tropical beach

Nightlife. Will your parents let you venture off the resort to find this nightlife? I prob wouldn't let my 18 year old out alone in a new country regardless of where it is. POP is a town resort area so nightlife and town life in general is apparent, so POP wins. PC is a resort location with no real town or town life but there are several areas where services and amenities service the resort areas, so not a town, and not really a village, but somewhere in between, and to be fair, PC has been changing over the last several years, so the resort areas feel less remote. With that being said, most of the resorts have on site discos so the fun you have depends on the crowd you have when you go. Some resorts are a bit better known for their on site life, and other resorts are better situated to make off resort nightlife more accessible. Again your parents might not let you go alone. Some resorts have a disco which is public but located just off their lobbies, so your parents might feel better if you were at one of those resorts. Often the animation staff is also there, and could keep an eye on you.

PC is not a party place, but more of a laid back resort area, fun can be had, don't get me wrong, but it is not pub crawl Cancun, that is for sure.

Gambling, again we are talking resorts, yes several resorts have little casinos, and there are a few public ones, but it is no Vegas.

All resorts will have bars and places to meet women so rest assured. But keep the resort young and active and probably lower priced to have a chance to find others in your age group.

Golf, well in PC there are resorts that include golf so this might be better on the budget. I am not a golfer, but Melia, and I think ocean blue/sand come to mind. Someone else has to help here...

Also in terms of price, PC is a bit more expensive than POP, prob about 200$-300$ more per person. It was worth every penny for me, just for the beach experience alone.

I would definitely choose Punta Cana over Puerta Plata. We found it rained more (quite a bit) in PP vs PC - we fell in love with PC because of it's beaches. Would not go back to PP, been there twice, that was enough for us.

Hello

I have stayed at both resorts, on the Bahia principe complexes.

Though both were very good, I would advise that you go to Punta Cana, the beaches at PC are a lot better, and there seemed to be quite a lot more activities for young people to do. I don't know if you intend going to a hotel or a complex, I would however recommend that you take a look at the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro, you will want for nothing and it has a casino on site. Though I must add there are other complexes available in PC I just happen to prefer the GBP.

The Bahia has many sections to it, the Punta Cana, Esmeralda or Ambar sides are lovely as well. It will all depend on your budget.

Hi Ross,

If you decide on Punta Cana it is best that you look at staying in one of the big resorts over a small resort. This will give you better chances that people are out at night time compared to a small resort where there might be only 10 people in the resort night club.

My favorite is the Gran Bahia complex, plenty of things to do there day and night and there has been times that we have not even had to leave the resort for night life.

Here is a youtube of the Bahias nightclub. The person walks around halfway through so you can see the size of it. It is one of the bigger resort clubs in PUJ and all drinks are included.

There is a casino at Bahia but it is small. (Drinks are not included is it is privately owned). If your parents allow you off the resort a short cab ride away is the Hard Rock casino. Big Vegas style casino. Or you all can go together.

We generally go off the resort most nights to party at both the popular tourist clubs and local bars. If your parents are not comfortable with this then staying at a big resort gives you better chances of people out at night.

There currently are 4 main popular tourist clubs but it is likely more and more will start opening in the future as PUJ is becoming more popular with the younger generations.

Imagines is a club in an actual cave which you might like. There usually is a rep that goes to each resort selling packages. These packages usually include a shuttle that picks you up at the resort and drops you off at the end of the night. Maybe your parents might feel more comfortable doing this then going off on your own in a taxi plus how many times can you say you partied in a cave? lol
