Welcome to the Punta Cana forums.

The Bahia resorts in Punta Cana are indeed very similar to those you have mentioned at the complex in Tulum, while at the same time there are some differences.

I will try to explain these as best I can for you.

As you pointed out, the Mexican resort complex consists of 3 different resorts, for a total I believe of 2,136 rooms.

The Punta Cana complex consists of 5 different resorts -

The Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro with 864 rooms - a family resort

The Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro - Premier with 504 rooms - a family resort.

The Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana with 708 rooms - a family resort

These three resorts can utilize each others amenities with the exception of their main buffets and gourmet a la cartes

The Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda Don Pablo Collection with presently 300 rooms and by the end of November 2012 will have 504 rooms with it's current expansion - a family resort

The Gran Bahia Principe Ambar Don Pablo Collection with 528 rooms - an adult only resort

The total number of rooms are presently at 2,904 and will increase to 3,108 by the end of November 2012, with the additional rooms being completed at the Esmeralda.

The Ambar and Esmeralda resorts may use each others facilities with the exception of each others main buffets but do share the one gourmet a la carte which is located at the Ambar resort - guests of the family Esmeralda resort may use the facilities at the adult only Ambar provided they do not have children with them under the age of 18.

The Ambar and Esmeralda resort guests may use all of the facilities at the Bavaro/Punta Cana and Premier resorts, but these last three resorts may not use any of the facilities at the Esmeralda or Ambar resorts.

The Ambar and Esmeralda resorts provide more top shelf liquors, have butler service, pillow menu, unlimited a la cartes , room safes included in the package price, 24 hour room service and do have a defined private beach area in front of their main pools.

There are some 2 story buildings in the complex but the vast majority are all 3 stories in height.

All resorts share the same shopping & entertainment area called the "Pueblo Principe" - same as in Tulum.

They do have a very efficient tram service that operates 21.5 hours per day - similar but seemingly more efficient than what we experienced in Tulum and are closer to the airport (30-35 minutes).

Upgrades, as in Tulum, are available at the Bavaro and Punta Cana resort - Club Diamond/Haciends and Club Golden.

Here is a link to a map of the Punta Cana complex that will assist you.

resortsmaps.com/popup.html…

The legend is at the bottom to assist you. The Ambar and Esmeralda resorts are very defined on the map. The Bavaro resort consists of room building numbers 20-39 & 71-79, the Punta Cana resort consists of room building numbers 1-19 and the Bavaro Premier resort consists of room building numbers 40-53.

I do hope this does assist you.
