Guess I need some assurance on Barcelo Bavaro Palace

My boyfriend and I just booked it. I had chosen Barcelo Bavaro Beach, buy once he read the expedia comments he felt the Palace would be nicer. Well...... I just read the reviews here, and it ain't looking to good!

Has anyone been there recently? What should I really expect? After this place we head to Couples Negril( thank the Lord) where the reviews look great.

We are going next week. I have some friends that are there right now and am anxious to hear their review when they get back. I will post here when I speak with them. Do a search for Barcelo on this forum. There were 2 girls that went to the Palace and had very good things to say about it and posted pictures as well.

As far as Couples Negril, we went there for our honeymoon in May of 2004 and absolutely loved it! It is smaller and had more of a boutique hotel feel to it. The food was really good, the staff really nice and drinks were great too. You must eat at Otaheite, really good! Have a fun trip!

Hello,

Thank you! I have this page bookmarked and will bookmark their reviews as well. I speak a little Spanish so I hope that helps, as that seems to be a big complaint from travelers( language issues).

Furthermore, thanks for the Negril info; I guess we will take it easy at Palace while expecting more from Negril:)

My friend's review of Barcelo Palace

Here is my review of the Palace/DR:

Beach/Pool/Resort grounds:

Absolutely beautiful!!! The beach is wonderful and there are plenty of lounge chairs to lay on the beach or the pool. Every morning I would either walk or run along the beach. The water is so pretty too! Gosh I want to be back there...

Food:

Overall the food is ok. We had the best luck w/buffets - so much to choose from!!! We went to the Palace buffet for lunch most of the time - it was just easier to get out of the pool and walk 2 feet. Every lunch was topped off w/ a soft serve ice cream cone!

We went to the Beach and Casino buffet for dinner and they were both great.

The restaurants we went to:

The Steak House - it was pretty good and worth checking out.

The Seafood Restaurant - (La Brisa?) - it was our favorite restaurant (non-buffet). We had grilled lobsters and a seafood pizza - both very good)

The Italian Restaurant (Los Pinos) - I didn't like mine, it tasted like it was form a can. But everyone else liked theirs :)

La Pina - this was a grill type place that was ok... But I think most places are "hit or miss"

Bohio - right near the pool. I don't think anyone liked their meal, but I don't want to discourage you...

All the buffets tend to have:

Breakfast: omelet station, cereal, lots of fruit, bread/toast, casserole dishes

Lunch: grill - you can have them grill calamari, fish, beef, chicken, etc, fruit, desserts, ice cream, pasta station, buffet dishes, french fries

Dinner - grill - same as lunch, pasta station, stir fry station, buffet dishes, desserts,

I think I gained 5 lbs!!! no joke!!!!

Bars/Drinks:

You have to order a "miami vice w/alcohol". It is so tasty! Its 1/2 pina colata and 1/2 strawberry daiquiri - make sure you say w/alcohol or else you will be drinking v i rgins all night! The Presidente beer is actually very good - add a lime and its like a corona!

Everywhere you go there is bottled water - they serve it in all the resturants and all the bars... (use it to brush your teeth to be safe).

One night we thought it would be funny to go to the disco bavaro (discotech) and it was hillarious! It was a club filled with young teens/early 20's. We felt so old and our jaws hit the floor when we witnessed how provocative they were! But, it was a lot of fun :)

Mini bar:

If you want it stacked w/just beer or however customized, leave a note and a little tip.

Tipping:

We think we over tipped, but we would leave a few dollars if we thought they worked extra hard (waiters/bartenders, etc)

Misc:

-There is a market on the beach. You can barter w/them - so never pay what they first ask for! They have lots of cheap jewelry, cigars, alcohol, t-shirts, etc. Check it out :)

-Miniature golf - there is a mini-golf course between the Golf and Casino resort. We played in the morning one day - around 9:30am and it was super hot! We all went one evening after dinner and it was perfect and a lot of fun!

-The guys went deep sea fishing one day - it was really rough, expensive $90 and they only caught 1 fish!

-Massages on the beach! They are wonderful... $25/1/2 hour, $45/hour. Very relaxing, right on the beach in a hut. At first it smells like cooking oil, but after they start massaging you, it doesn't matter :)

-The casino may say its open 24 hours - the tables don't open til after 8pm...

-Kayaking - one afternoon we went kayaking and it was fun; something different.

-Some of our group went snorkeling throught the resort and they said you couldn't see anything...

-We thought about going on an excursion one day, but opted to be lazy! There is plenty to do on the resort...

-Also, there is a train that takes you to the other resorts. But after you explore the resort, you realize its just a nice walk.

-insulated cup - if you want to drink on the beach, bring an insulated cup and the bartender will fill that for you.

Hotel Room:

Just ok. Nothing better then a days inn/holiday inn but very clean. Besides you are only there to sleep and shower.... You may want to bring your own hair dryer. Two of us had vacuum cleaner hairdryers and it would take forever to dry! So, most of the time we never dried our hair!

Don't forget to pack:

SUNSCREEN. The sun is intense! We would put 30 spf multiple times and still get burnt. Bring a visor or a hat... it helps!

Language barrier:

Definitely bring a cheat sheet of spanish words - hola, gracias, el bano, cerveza, aqua, etc. English is not the primary language and a lot of the visitors are from all over...

We joked that the palace was the "retirement home" b/c it doesn't have much of a night life. We found the Beach resort to be the most fun and the most to offer. Its very lively and they have a few bars that are fun.

Overall, we had a great time and there was plenty to keep us busy! I think 4-5 nights is the perfect amount of time to go. The beach is beautiful. If you are going to relax and have a good time - this is going to be a wonderful time for you all.

One last thing, when you get to the airport (arriving or leaving) people hound you to carry your bags, just say no (you may have to be persistent) and they will leave you alone.

Let me know if you have any questions - I would be happy to answer them for you!

Can you ask your friend if they will do laundry? After Palace I'm heading to Negril, so I don't want to travel with dirty clothes...lol

SF-- Visited "Palace" in January. Agree with recent posts that expansive Beach is best part of the resort.

The very musty, outdated rooms are the downfall. (Probably far worse in summer heat!)

Bathrooms also in disrepair( ceiling water stains, floors poor condition, etc.)

Suggest bringing "odor control spray" along to diffuse.

We tried a candle, with no luck. Talking to other guests, similiar complaints no matter what building you stayed in.

Service + food in par with most other resorts.

We made the best of it, realizing that we paid a fair price for our 5 nights.

Next time we'll choose a newer resort, pay more, and not have the room issues. There are so many nicer resorts we hope to try.

I'm sure you'll have a great time, just remember your spray!

wintertrip... i'm sure the rooms do need work as all the posts i've read that say they do but how much time do you really spend in your room. if you are spending time in your room your missing the best part about being where your at. yeah, i'll admit, rooms don't bother me. i just need a place to sleep, store clothes, and get busy if you know what i mean. i've been to a one other all inclusive resort and it was just so boring, still loved it, but boring. i felt really confined with the options that were presented to me within the resort, food, activities, etc. the barcelo bavaro palace there are many more options which make it a five star hotel when in reality room wise your probably talking more a 3 star. the resort itself is amazing and deserves that 5 star but maybe not the rooms. you pay for an all inclusive package and at the palace you can get all activities included where as if you go to another all inclusive you are most definitely going to go off the resort to find entertainment, unless your content with hanging at the beach all day and doing nothing else. at the palace we are not planning on getting off the resort except to maybe rent a 4 wheeler and jet skis.... no tours. at $60 per person a night i'm not going to complain about anything. i'm looking forward to a great trip, thanks for the response winter. beam
