** ALERT,Phones ring off the hook @ Apple re:Sunscape**

ALERT:

There has been reports that the phones at Apple Vacations have been ringing off the hook today. High numbers of guests from Suncape The Beach Resort between the week of 12/25/04 & 1/1/05 are demanding their money back.

Apple is not sure what to do with such a problem. They say this has never happened like this before.People are even calling the charge card companies for credit, from the charge to Apple for the vacation. The charge card companies are being very helpful.

If you are one of these people calling, trying to call or called. Please keep trying to get threw or use your travel agent.

Apple is looking to settle this week with the guests of Sunscape that week. At least that is what they say.

Any one have got some results or an update on this problem???

Zman & others have done a service for those that went to Sunscape & felt that they received far less than acceptable conditions AND those that almost went there but decided not to take not just a chance but want to avoid what seems to heading into a week full of problems.

Zman & others that feel as strongly as he does will probably relax & move on if & when they get someone to both listen and act on their behalf & provide something material as some sort of compensation for their aggravation.

That's just my guess as I do not personally know anyone who's posted on this site.

I'm trying to keep track of what everyone is saying about this, but Zman, what have you done to get your refund? Sorry if I missed something you may have written already, but did you wait until your vacation was over to start complaining or did you talk with resort staff first? As bad as you say it is, I'm guessing you probably started asking for your refund on day 3, or earlier, which would give you 4-5 days to work on it. For some reason, I get the feeling that you're trying to ride others coattails on this one - possibly b/c you didn't get on it right away. Maybe you're just trying to get others to think they, too, can get a free vacation. Thanks for clarifying. If nothing else, it will help the rest of us in the future know what to do if we get stuck in your situation.

Think zman is doing a great public service. Think we're more concerned with others not sharing our generally poor experience when so many other places are so good in the DR.

I know that some people got cash refunds while at The Beach from AMResorts. Several days worth.

There was pretty much a standing offer of a free week back at Sunscape The Beach later in the year (no airfare of course) from management. I know my wife has refused to go back her experience was so poor.

Depending our your credit card company's approach, the likelihood of a financial settlement is good.

Zman, keep us posted on Apple's status.

Don't know anything about Apple Vacations but we just returned from a week at Sunscape The Beach (12/25 - 1/1) and had a fabulous time. There were a few small glitches due to the newness of everything but nothing that got in the way of our family of five having a great time. Beautiful pool, gorgeous beach, plenty of chairs, shade if you needed it, lots of food and choices, bars everywhere you turned, water sports equipment, a lovely spa, and the most wonderfully hospitable employees--the people of the Dominican Republic are the best hosts! I'd return in a minute to Sunscape.

It still seems like we weren't all at the same resort. The big difference appears to be in the rooms and at the front desk, where MY resort was a complete mess.

In the second hour I spent there, I encountered a person I now guess is zman who had returned from his second "still under construction" room and was getting a bit more firm about wanting a room that was habitable. As I stood there, he was given his third room key. He returned 10 minutes later, having walked into someone elses room and was much less than pleased. In the meantime, other people had returned with the same story.

The story circulating was that their reservations person had quit the day before and the computer wasn't working. True or not, it seemed to fit as staff worked off well-worn room lists and sent people to already occupied rooms. The end result was that many of us accepted rooms that would otherwise be unacceptable.

Many of you have read through these forums and made up your minds that zman is a perfectionist or a man after a freebie, but if it's the same guy I encountered, he was vocal in asking for solutions from day one and never got one.

Other people settled for rooms without AC, spent nights in rooms with standing water, accepted water dripping on their bed, used the common area bathrooms as theirs didn't work and endured other room disasters beyond just having people walk in on them at 3am.

The man I saw in the lobby, then the next day with the Apple rep, deserves not only a refund, but compensation as well.

Those who had a good room were in a solid three-star resort. The alcohol was top-notch - no question there. The pool was spectacular.

The food service was, in my view, dismal. While the buffet selection was wide, the food quality was below that of any local $8 a plate buffet restaurant. In the a-la-carte restaurants, the wait staff was good, but the kitchen was killing them. Mixed bag of quality, temperature and an 80% shot at the meal you ordered.

Now to get really picky about what we were offered when we paid for our trip. We were subsequently told that everything was fully operational by our AAA travel agent and then by an Apple Vacations rep who was conferenced in. For those who were there, (if you weren't there, telling us that we're expecting too much seems uninformed at best) consider these things you could have done:

Gamble in the casino. (It was behind the "Show Time" Bar.)

Hop in one of the "various delightful Jacuzzis."

Visit the "Irish Pub & Cigar Piano Bar".

Let your kids spend more than 2 consecutive hours at "Explorers Club".

Pick up a "weekly entertainment program".

Actually receive directions on how to use the safe, the phone (voice mail in particular) or a list of tv stations.

Any mention of how to order or what to order for room service.

Enjoyed the "Musical Stair" (It would have been in "Santo Domingo Plaza" by the Cafe Kafe)

Anyone remember mythical 8th restaurant... the "Bella Italia?"

Find medical staff (for any reason.)

"Laugh and dance the night away" at "Desires Sports, Music and Lounge Bar".

I remain convinced that this was a three-star hotel with five-star potential. Now, I want the difference back. Zman deserves a full refund and more. Some of you got are you feeling lucky pricing, but we paid for a top-notch resort that we were told was in top-notch form.

I think, Hindsight, we definitely were at the same resort. Yes, I was one of those people but there were too many to pick one out of the crowd. In all my travel years I or others never saw something like what took place at Sunscape.

I can remember one man in particular who was talking at the top of his lungs after returning from looking at his fifth room the second day of his stay. All he wanted was a room for his family to enjoy their vacation.

He wa upset because he just walked into a room were he said nicely " I just walked into a room where people were making babies". He went on getting everyones attention saying all he wants is dignity and someone to tell him the truth.

This man deserves a full refund because, I believe at that point things started to turn and the management realized that the game was over. It was like, Give Me Liberty Or Give Me ....... Who was that masked man?

No, I do not want a freebie or full refund. I'll just chalk this up as experience. Fortunately I don't need a freebie. I just want, as this gentleman said, dignity and some compensation for what some of us believe we are entitled to. I will pursue this as I know others are. As said yesterday, the Apple office did not expect such a overload of phone calls.

Yes I do agree this hotel has great potential, but unfortunately the people that had a bad experience will always be diseased for this resort, but hopefully not for the island that captures the beauty of the Carribean and its wonderful people.

You can't just put a uniform on a person and say "go to work" and expect them to. Unfortunately that is what the management of Sunscape did. It doesn't work anywhere in the world. I'm happy to see in spite of all the problems there were people that had a great time. In fact, so did I, just having my blessed family around me. But it would have been nicer under different conditions.

Yes my friend I was at the same resort as you and I'm still looking for the Italian restaurant and the piano bar,

Zman

My people are talking to their people. As many others are doing.

Apple is trying to work with Sunscape on this issue.

Hang in there. There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel
