La Romana in august

We are a group of four ladies going to Punta Cana in two weeks! We've been there before, last december -04 and it was really great! We've been on the Saona Island trip and to Higüey, and were now thinking of going to La Romana...anyone experiences from there? Any good shopping (compared to Higüey, which was really a messy place...)?

Any people from Scandinavia on this forum?

Hello

It very nice to hear that you are coming back for more! - that's a great recommendation for Punta Cana.

La Romana is a lot more picturesque than Higuey for sure.

Altos De Chavon is a reconstruction of a 16th c Italian village and very pretty above the Chavon river and there are bars, restaurants and boutiques there and it's part of Casa De Campo in La Romana where they also have a wonderful marina - well worth a visit.

Always keep your wits about you when outside of the resorts and never trust strangers - don't be charmed into a false sense of security and you'll be fine - just be pleasant & brief with everyone and they will do the same in return

There's a huge supermarket called Jumbo at La Romana which is great for shopping and prices are clearly marked and you can have a snack here too.

There is a central park area in La Romana which is nice and a church. You'll be hassled by shoe shine boys even if you are wearing flip-flops and there will be a whole host of young locals offering you this & that but they soon go if you smile firmly and say 'no gracias'

Thanks a lot Boy-Bavaro! It's sure gonna be fun! :) We have a good friend (local) at the hotel, maybe he's gonna join us when going to La Romana. Taking care of us...

yeah, we noticed the shoe-shine-boys last time in Higüey...cute and very good at what they're doing, but should definitely be in school instead. Our guide told us that they earn more than him, although he also worked as a police over there.

Sounds good: markets with fixed prices. Immediately when they see a "turista" it gets really pricey. And I don't have the patience to bargain...(although you have to...)

soon gonna be there! :)

Hi Alexandra,

we really enjoyed our stay - thank's for asking! We've got a couple of friends there, so of course it was wonderful to meet them again. We went to La Romana and checked out Altos de Chavon (the Italian Village), which was really beautiful. We also went to the city for some shopping, but were quite tired and didn't feel for walking around...so just went to the shopping mall...

Allegro is a really good place to stay at! Have been there twice and love the entertainment! I can compare to Punta Cana Beach Club and Resort (a five star hotel), which was really boooring. Lots of bugs and nothing to do, although the food was excellent. We are probably going back to Allegro in april -06, can't wait! Or then we just might rent an apartment for 3 weeks and travel some more in Dominicana.

If you have got some more questions you can also e-mail me at: sarishaker80@hotmail.com.
