Parque Enriquillo to Colonial Zone- We'd like to walk

How far is Colonial Zone from Parque Enriquillo? We will be taking the Express Bus from PC to SD and would like to walk this stretch to our hotel in Colonial Zone area. Of the several hotels in the Colonial Zone area; a few (that we are contacting) keep trying to "Scare" us that that's not a safe walk especially if you don't look like a local. Is that really true?? We are not warm and fuzzy types who will get easily intemindated; so we feel we'll be fine (actually a little bit roughing and mixing with locals is kind of fun) but if it is really that "dangerous" then we might take a taxi. What are expert opinions on that???

Not sure of the exact site of the bus stop but from Parque Enriquillo (large square) you need to walk down Avenida Duarte (western side of square and south downhill towards the sea) and keep walking towards the Zona Colonial. See google maps for the general layout. Eventually you reach a pedestrianised street (El Conde) - main shopping street and from there you can head to your hotel. From Parque this should take about 10 to 15 minutes). Have walked this route many times (white British male) and never felt threatened - I think you know what to do - just look as though you know what you are doing!!

The southern end of Duarte has been cleaned up and is now knwo as Barrio Chino - good place for a cheap chinese meal.

The expreso Bávaro faves the south side of the park, in the same spot were the Higüey bus leaves from. With the park in front of you, turn left, then at the corner is Duarte, turn left and it will be a downhill walk of a few blocks through Chinatown.

It's a busy area but perfectly safe in the daytime.

Just make sure you don't have any valuables visible that are easy to snatch, like gold jewelry, cameras, cell phones, or purse of course. Once you pass China Town you'll be in an area where many people have gotten their valuables stolen.
