What area of the island to stay?

We are two couples in our mid-fifties who like to do stuff and not just sit on the beach. We'll hike, zip-line and do just about anything. That being said, we also like nice quiet beaches where there really aren't very many tourists. What areas of the island do you recommend?

We aren't interested in all-inclusive resorts.

Cabarete or Las Terenas fit the bill nicely for you. EWR to POP for Cabarete or JFK to AZS for LT.

I've went to Las Terrenas quite a few times at different times of year and have never seen the beaches crowded although the roads through town usually are., so that might be a good choice. There are quite a few good excursions, 24 waterfalls, dr-dominicanrepublic.com/el-limon-excursion/ is a pretty good horseback ridding excursion nearby.

Usually the beaches in Puerto Plata, Sosua, and Boca Chica area are always petty crowded. You said you don't like just sitting around, there are quite a few things to do in the Puerto Plata area.Sea World, ziplining etc

Samana and, IMHO, better still, Las Galeras. Affordable accommodation of all types, great beaches, Rincon, Fronton, Playita, Madama to name a few. Excursions, whale watching (in season) snorkelling, good restaurants, friendly locals and ex pats, unspoilt and just wonderful. (Probably why I live here lol)
