1st trip, need help!

We will be traveling with 2 twenty-something sons, and need advice on a place to stay. We are Not parties and won't be out bar hopping. Planning in lots of time in the water and very little indoors, but want something clean, with pleasant staff. Also need to know what to expect to spend for eating, fuel, etc. have seen posts about resorts adding unexpected fees, etc.. Any tips for 1st timers would be appreciated.

Check out sites like VRBO and Homeaway and consider renting a condo. They are often more affordable than hotels/resorts, have full kitchens, more room, etc. You often deal directly with owners and get more personalized service.

We rented a condo at the Sand Dollar and really liked the location. It is right on the water and not far from town and other restaurants. If you're diving, Dive Friends dive shop is on site and you can access Bari Reef right in front of the resort. Same goes for snorkeling. Everyone we encountered there was very nice and helpful. No dive or snorkel site is really that far away by driving.

We rented a pick-up truck for the week and only had to fill up once. $52. We had been doing a lot of driving too.

After traveling to other places in the Caribbean (Grand Cayman, US Virgin Islands), we found restaurants to be more reasonably priced in Bonaire. Plenty of good ones to choose from too!

Lots of good lodging information on www.infobonaire.com as well. You will pay less if you do not stay at a place on the water.

Just returned and found some gems. Den Laman Apts, fully self contained and loads of room for your family. Diving shop on property and the best sea view ever! Because of where its situated the beach is almost private. no restaurant but loads of great places to eat around. just around the corner theres a fabulous gourmet sandwich shop called between 2 buns. a must try. Or you can try Windsock in the same general area. Across the road they have a beach for their guests, very reasonably priced well kept and they are also connected to a dive shop. Not much partying on Bonaire anyway so get out and about in the days. Get a car, drive around its very safe and the people are great. It's my third time there and I will be back.
