First timers seeking advice

We're an active middle aged couple thinking of going to Barbados for a week in March, 2013. Looking for an upscale hotel right on the beach with a pool and a gym. We like a good meal and a drink or two at night, preferably within walking distance. We like to be near but not in the middle of some night life. Also, we like to get off the beach in the middle of the day so should we rent a car or is it just a an expensive hassle? Appreciate any help.

A few questions and answers will help find what you want.

What type of budget do you have in mind? Obviously you're going at peak time so the hotel prices will be higher than off season.

Getting a car isn't a hassle and it makes getting around the whole island easier but there is an excellent public transport system.

Here's a list of some car rental companies. Shop around for the best price but have found MAH has the best deals for us.

I been going to Barbados for 15 years. alway at the St Lawrence gap area. there are alot of nice places right on the beach. Southern Palms, Ocean 11 are couple, not sure about a gym, but everything else. You may want reserve soon, as March is a BUSY TIME. good luck. Paul

On the South Coast, have a look at either:

Accra Beach Hotel & Spa

Hilton Barbados

Southern Palms Beach Club & Resort Hotel

Bougainvillea Beach Resort

Ocean Two Resort & Residences

Coral Mist Beach Hotel

Coral Sands Beach Resort

On the West Coast, have a look at either:

The Tamarind

The Sandpiper

Coral Reef Club

Sandy Lane Hotel

Colony Club

The Fairmont Royal Pavillion

These cover a wide range of budgets and would provide what you require.

Renting a car would be a good idea as it provides you with an immense level of flexibility, particularly if you stayed at a hotel such as Bougainvillea Beach Resort which is away from the main road.

Hope this helps

Thanks to all. I was looking at Ocean2 and The Hilton but Paul d likes Southern Palms and it's on BGI's list as well so I'll take a look at that now. Thanks also for the car rental advice and I'll reserve one. A cold, rainy morning in Maine in October is a fitting time to work on a trip to Barbados. I take it that the South Coast is a good place to meet our needs?

You should be fine on the South Coast. It has everything you want as does the West Coast.

Ocean Two definately has the gym that you require. Its at the quiet end of the Gap but within easy walking distance of bars and restaurants . It should suit all your needs . Im not too sure if Southern Palms has a gym , but its in a fantastic location .

S Palms does have a gym which has recently been moved/renovated and is now near the small pool. Can't vouch for it as I have never used it lol.
