Where to base ourselves Paget or Hamilton?

So I've learnt that our budget needs to be increased a lot! We can stretch to $300 per night.

We were wondering how far Paget is from Hamilton? Could you bicycle in and out? I'm wondering if perhaps Paget is where we should stay rather than Hamilton bearing in mind we do like to be pretty close to restaurants, bars etc but also like to be near the beach? Any opinions?

Could you cycle from around Horseshoe bay if you base yourself there? (We are pretty fit and generally cycle a lot!)

I suggest Hamilton as the place to base yourself. You can catch the buses to the beaches from there. Bermuda is extremely hilly and the driving on narrow roads and bicycles is not the best idea.

Only 2-3 miles away, buses much safer- I would stay in Paget- to get away from noise/crowds,- but that is me- can always take a bus in 15-20 minutes into town

How about Salt Kettle House or Greenbank Guesthouse? Both right on Hamilton Harbour, so you could jump in each morning for a nice swim. An easy ferry ride into town, and you can scooter over to the beaches in just a few minutes. There are a couple of nice restaurants nearby with Fourways, Blu and Beau Rivage, or take the ferry into Hamilton and cab home...

If you want to be near to Bermuda's beaches as well as downtown Hamilton then locations in Paget Parish would suit the purpose. There are several modest/moderately priced guest accommodations (guesthouses with self-catering facilities & B&B's) in the area--

LITTLE POMANDER--(Hamilton Harbour)--

SALT KETTLE GUESTHOUSE--(Hamilton Harbour)--

GRANAWAY GUESTHOUSE--(Hamilton Harbour)--

WATERCOLOURS B&B--(Hamilton Harbour)--

DAWKINS MANOR--(sout shore)--

GRAPE BAY COTTAGES--(oceanfront--south shore)--

RENDEVOUS COTTAGE--(oceanfront--south shore)--

'..SAND PEBBLES STUDIO..' (private rental..oceanfront..Warwick)--

Bermuda is a relatively tiny place--21 square miles of landmass...26-28 miles by road from end-to-end...3-4 miles by road from shore-to-shore. Nowhere is going to be very far from anywhere else in Bermuda. So if you are avid cyclists ("...We also like bike (generally 30/40 mile trips..We are pretty fit and generally cycle a lot!...") you can certainly pedal your way from place to place without much difficulty. The '..catch..' to riding pedal bicycles in Bermuda is that while Bermuda's roads are generally in excellent condition; they are also narrow, winding and often traffic-crowded...and Bermuda is '..hillier..' than most imagine. There is also the wonderfully scenic BERMUDA RAILWAY TRAIL system-- http://www.bermudarailway.net --that is pedestrain/bicycle-only for most (but not all) of its length. You haven't indicated the time of year of your proposed visit (an omitted not-so-minor-detail). but daytime Air Temp and Humidity during high/summer season can often run in the 80º/80% range.

Bermuda also has a genuinely excellent, easy to figure out and use, economic, public transportation system--buses and ferries that will take you to--or near to--just about anywhere yopu might want to go in Bermuda.....and a hot, sticky day, most buses and ferries are air conditioned. You can roll bicycles and motor scooters aboard most public ferry routes (some exceptions) but as you might imagine, bicycles and motor scooter are not allowed aboard public buses.

For all this, bicycling in Bermuda is an active '..day's excursion/exercise..'...but not a realistically practical mode of personal transort for visitors/tourists.

Multi-speed, 'mountain-type' pedal bicycle rentals are available for rental from several liveries (sliding scales for daily rental rates)--

I'm not sure how much you know about Bermuda...or how much destination reserach you've done on your own...but perhaps some of this will assist you in figuring out Bermuda's layout and orient yourself to relative locations, distance, travel times, etc--

BERMUDA--Handy Reference Map--(Orientation, relative locations, etc)--

BERMUDA BUS INFO--(Routes, schedules, fares, etc)--

BERMUDA FERRY INFO--(Routes, schedules, etc)--

We used to rent apartments or stay at the Salt Kettle and enjoyed both experiences. The last few trips, we have stayed at the Royal Palms in Hamilton and really enjoyed the hotel and the convenience to stores and restaurants. Also, from Hamilton, you can the bus to anywhere on the island. You can get to the beaches in about 20 minutes. This time around we are staying at Pompano just to experience being right at the beach. Also dinner is included in the rates so we don't have to traipse out again to have dinner.

We were based in Paget, close to the shops there. If hilly walking is OK with you, that area is very hilly. Two buses serve Hamilton, depending where in Paget you are. Some areas are served by both, others only by one or the other.

If you are able to walk, there is a ferry stop opposite Hamilton. So you can walk to it or from it only as there is no bus service along the road in Paget beside the harbour. If you buy the bus pass, then it's possible to make combinations to go everywhere by bus/ferry. The road down to Horseshoe Bay is steep. There is a bloke there who will take you up or down for a $1 each.
