First Time Visitor Has Questions

We'll be visiting Bermuda for the first time next week. I have several questions that I would greatly appreciate being answered by those in the know.

How often do the ferries run from Hamilton to the Dockyards? How often do they run from Ham. to St. Georges? What time is the last one from the Dockyards back to Ham. and what time is the last one from St. Georges back to Ham?

We will be there over the Aug. 2 & 3 holidays. Will we see a reduction in bus and ferry service then? Any stores or restaurants closed during that time?

We are fair skinned, so what is the best snorkeling beach that also rents sun umbrellas?

How long is the bus ride from Hamilton to Church Bay?

These Hamilton restaurants sound interesting. Would you avoid or recommend any of these:

Lemon Tree Cafe

Bermuda Bistro

Jamaican Grill

La Trattoria

Spring Garden Rest. & Bar

Thanks in advance!

>>>How often do the ferries run from Hamilton to the Dockyards? How often do they run from Ham. to St. Georges? What time is the last one from the Dockyards back to Ham. and what time is the last one from St. Georges back to Ham?<<<

It's simple enough to refer to the published public FERRY SCHEDULE for the answers to your questions--

www.gov.bm/portal/server.pt…

and though you didn't ask...easy enough to check public BUS SCHEDULES as well--

www.gov.bm/portal/server.pt…

There will be BUS and FERRY schedule brochures readily available in Bermuda when you arrive

>>>We will be there over the Aug. 2 & 3 holidays. Will we see a reduction in bus and ferry service then? Any stores or restaurants closed during that time?<<<

As you're already aware, Thursday, August 2nd and Friday, August 3rd are national holidays. Sunday, August 5th is...well Sunday...So all public transportation--buses and ferries will be operating on their reduced-service, SUNDAY & HOLIDAY schedules. Though Thursday and Friday are national holidays, the ORANGE--Hamilton-Dockyard-Saint George's ferry route will continue to operate on these days with a slightly modified schedule.

MOST (but not all) stores and shops will be CLOSED for the Thursday & Friday national Holidays. MOST (but not all) restaurants, pubs, bars, tours/excursions, etc. Will remain OPEN for business as usual (if a bit busier)

>>>We are fair skinned, so what is the best snorkeling beach that also rents sun umbrellas?<<<

Given the '..fair skinned...sun umbrella..' criteria...then your best bet for snorkeling-from-the-beach will be at TOBACCO BAY, located on the backside of Saint George's. There is a beachhouse there that rents sand chairs, beach umbrellas, basic snorkeling gear etc..

The best snorkeling-from-the-beach will be at CHURCH BAY, along Bermuda's south shore. There is a concessionaire there that rents basic snorkeling gear and sells basic beach snacks & beverages...but no umbrellas.

>>>How long is the bus ride from Hamilton to Church Bay?<<<

The regular #7 bus route(s) from the main bus terminal in downtown Hamilton (Washington Street..btwn: Church & Victoria Sts...next to City Hall) to CHURCH BAY will take approx. 35 very pleasant minutes.

>>>These Hamilton restaurants sound interesting. Would you avoid or recommend any of these:...Lemon Tree Cafe Bermuda Bistro Jamaican Grill La Trattoria Spring Garden Rest. & Bar...<<<

There's nothing 'wrong' with any of your selections. But with the exception of LA TRATTORIA..there's nothing particularly special about 'em either. They're all '..okay..' for '..something basic to eat..'. LA TRATTORIA (along with Portofino's) on the other hand, is a top-notch Italian restaurant. The food here is more than good enough to pass muster with the discerning palates at mobbed-up joints in 'Jersey (and some of these people take their Italian food very seriously indeed).

Great response KDKSAIL. You forgot only one thing. They should wear red and blue next week. Go Somerset!

Actually...it's a little like when U.Tennessee plays U.Kentucky. When local residents ask wheter you're an East-end or West-end supporter, your best answer will be---

--"...No hablo a inglés..."

--"...Ich spreche kein Englisch..."

--"...Je ne parle pas anglais..."

--"...Jeg snakker ikke engelsk..."

--"...영어 못합니다..."

--"...I'm Canadian...I don't follow any sport that doesn't involve ice.."
