Affordable, Safe, clean Accomodation for two seniors July

I am thinking about sending my parents to Bermuda for a anniversary gift. They had their honeymoon 40 years ago in the Hamilton area and if possible would like to stay in the area. Do you know of a clean, safe and affordable place that would be good for them? I have gotten some prices but am confused as some tell you the tax, service charge up front and some don't.

The Rosedon gets good reviews but without knowing what you consider affordable it's difficult to help you. What time of year will they be going? What do they like to do on vacation, are they interested in the beach for instance?

Do you know where they stayed on their honeymoon?

Just noticed that you said July.

There are several fine choices in the downtown Hamilton and Hamilton Harbour area that you can check out--

FAIRMONT HAMILTON PRINCESS HOTEL (downtown Hamilton)--

http://www.fairmont.com/hamilton/

ROSEDON HOTEL (downtown Hamilton)

http://www.rosedon.com/

ROYAL PALMS HOTEL (downtown Hamilton)

http://www.royalpalms.bm/

KINGSTON HOUSE B&B (edge of downtown Hamilton)

http://www.bbbermuda.com/

NEWSTEAD-BELMONT HILLS HOTEL (Hamilton Harbour)

http://www.newsteadbelmonthills.com/

FOURWAYS INN--(near Hamilton Harbour)

http://www.fourwaysinn.com/

SALT KETTLE GUESTHOUSE--(Hamilton Harbour)

GREENBANK GUESTHOUSE & COTTAGES--(Hamilton Harbour)

http://www.greenbankbermuda.com/

GRANAWAY GUESTHOUSE--(Hamilton Harbour)

http://www.granaway.com/

WATERCOLOURS B&B--(Hamilton Harbour)

Properties in the downtown Hamilton area will have the most convenient access (easy walking/strolling distances) to all of the dining, shopping and nightlife alternatives of Hamilton...as well as convenient access to almost all public bus and ferry routes.

Properties on Hamilton Harbour will have convenient access to the PINK--Hamilton-Paget-Warwick public ferry connection to downtown Hamilton and less convenient access to the #8 public bus route along the Middle Road (Fourways Inn will have convenient access to #8 public bus route).

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess provides free, limited-schedule, private ferry/shuttle service across to the Fairmont Southampton Hotel and Fairmont beachclub.

Rosedon Hotel provides free, limited-schedule private shuttle service out to the public-acccess portion of Elbow Beach and free vouchers for beach chair & umbrella rentals.

Newstaed-Belmont Hills Hotel provides free private ferry service across the harbour to downtown Hamilton and free shuttle service to Coco Reef Resort on Elbow Beach.

Most rates for Bermuda hotels will be quoted for the room rate, per night only. All hotels and commercial guest accommodations will then add 9.5% (7.25% Hotel Occupancy + 2.25% Tourism Fund) Government Tax to this...as well as an added Gratuity/Service Charge (usually 10% or equivalent Resort Levy) to the published room rates.

If you're comparing actual hotel rates to those provided by on-line travel sites or tour packagers, make sure that published rates include or exclude these additional taxes, gratuity charges and fees. With any '..meal paln..' rate offered, there will usually be an additional Gratuity (most usually 17%) added to the per day price quoted. When in doubt...it's best to assume that additional taxes, gratuities/service charges, fees are not included to the rate until you can confirm.

I would recommend Rosemont - fabulous location just behind Rosedon (opposite Hamilton Princess) and a lot cheaper. Clean, comfortable, walking distance to town plus pool. Have stayed there many times in the past.

Rosemont is more affordable than Rosedon and there are sea views which Rosedon does not have except from a few front rooms. Rosemont is nice. However, I must admit that Rosedon is my favorite place to stay in Bermuda. If you want a very nice place for your parents to have dinner I suggest Ascots which is close to both properties.you can look at their menu online and the food is great and presented beautifully.

Though there is no on-premises restaurant at ROSEDON, its nightly rate also includes a full, limited menu breakfast and a light afternoon Tea service ...as well as free shuttle service between the hotel and the public portion of Elbow Beach and free vouchers for beach chair/chaise lounge and umbrellas from the rental concessionaire at the beach. Though there are no real water views at Rosedon, its lushly landscaped and meticulously manicured grounds and gardens would be classified as a '..botanic garden..' anywhere other than in Bermuda.

If physical mobility is an issue, then the #51, #52, #53 'Standard' rooms, loctaed at the rear of the main 'house', with patio/balcony overlooking the garden & pool is probably best...as these rooms are accessible at '..street level..', without steps (though up an inclined walkway). Failing these, then #29, #30, #31, #32 'Superior' rooms or #75, #76 'Deluxe' rooms will be the most readiloy accessible down/up a 1/2 flight of stairs.

Will throw in my two cents worth since my "older" in laws (in their late 70s now- and having visited BDA since the late 60s - including stays at Lantana, New Stead, Horizon, Glencoe and a host of the long gone properties) returned two years ago after a 10 year absence and stayed at Rosedon. As Kidsail indicated there are room that are suited for people who have problems with stairs/steps and you can be assisted in this by calling Rosedon. My inlaws had read about Rosedon and after staying there they were very enthusiastic about it telling us that it still retained the "old Bermuda charm".

If they are willing to cab there should be no problem getting around- they can get a card from the cab owner with his/her cell number and most will be "johnny on the spot" for a return pick up at a specified time. Having taken my 85 year old grandfather to BDA in the mid 90s I was impressed by the deference shown to him and the willingness of Bermudians to assist him and us (without being patronizing). I think this is a cultural difference between the US and BDA; in BDA (and I think this still hold true some 16 years later) there is a deference and respect for elders. I write this because I believe that your parents will also benefit from the cultural respect and inclination that Bermudians have for their elders.
