taxi fare question to Pembroke

What is the estimated taxi fare from the airport to Pembroke? Is bus/public transportation a viable option with a carry on?

Thanks!

Depends on what size the carry on bag is. There's really nowhere to put luggage on the bus. Where in Pembroke will you be staying? You still have to get to your accommodation from wherever the nearest bus stop is. You may even have to take two buses. Taxi fare will probably be around $25 - 30.

As noted above, the average taxi fare from the airport to most addresses in Pembroke will run $25-$30.

Public Transportation regulations specifically prohibit carrying luggage aboard public buses. Having said this, SOME carry-on baggage MIGHT be allowed, at the sole discretion of the bus driver. BUT just because the airlines have all but given up on limiting the size and quantity of passanger '..carry-on..' baggage and a passenger has been allowed aboard an aircraft carrying a '..steamer trunk..' as a '..carry-on..'....does NOT mean that this same '..carry-on..' will be allowed aboard a public bus in Bermuda. Also be aware that CASH fares aboard public buses are EXACT CHANGE...COINS ONLY (US or BDA)...NO BILLS. The bus fare between airport and Pembroke will be $4.50

If you're staying at a commercial hotel or guest accommodation (NOT a private rental property or private address) in Pembroke, an alternative to a taxi is one of the shared-shuttle services. The shared shuttle service fare to most commercial guest accommodations in Pembroke should be $15 per person.

Thank you. I am staying at a private rental property brokered here on Tripadvisor, so it would be a private property. I think bus is out of the question, since our carry on is large. How about taxi tipping? Does it work the same in the states (10-20%)?

Pretty much the same...use your own custom & practice.

In Bermuda, many (perhaps most) restaurants apply a 15%-17% automatic gratuity to checks....so check the menu or check to find out if an automatic gratuity has been applied before deciding how much tip you're going to leave.

Look out for a blue flag on the hood of the cab

makes the cabbie a certified tour guide.

A simple airport transfer doesn't require a Blue Flag certified taxi tour guide. Any taxi in the taxi rank located just outside the exit from the airport Arrival Hall will do equally well.

If you plan to take a private taxi tour of Bermuda during your stay....then using a BLUE FLAG AMBASSADOR taxi tour guide (identified by a Blue Flag 'fender flag', medallion or window decal on the taxi) is a fine idea.

Thanks to all for answering! A couple more...are the tour taxi more expensive? And what makes them different...do they know the best sightseeing routes?

Do taxis accept credit cards?

There's no difference in the vehicles themselves but private taxi tours run $40/hr (1-4 passengers) or $50.50/hr. (5-6 passengers) with a three(3) hour minimum. There are any number of taxi drivers that offer private taxi tours but BLUE FLAG taxi tour drivers/guides have taken the time and gone to the effort of undergoing a certification process by the Bermuda Dept. of Tourism to receive their BLUE FLAG certifications. All of these BLUE FLAG certified taxi tour guides are VERY knowledgeable about all things Bermuda. In a place as tiny as Bermuda, most will cover the same '..ground..' of sights and attractions...but they can also '..customize..' their tours to accommodate your own particular interests (art & architecture, flora & fauna, general or military history, parks & gardens, etc). These private taxi tours represent one of the best relative '..bargains..' in Bermuda.

There may be some taxis in Bermuda that now accept credit cards...but for the most part...NO...Drivers will accept cash payments in US or BDA currency...and a few will even convert to CDN (though they still refuse to take beaver pelts in trade).
