Bermuda in Mid March: Weather, activities, etc.

We're looking at visiting Bermuda in Mid March. I know its off season. What I'm curious about is I read somewhere that that island and water activities will be "limited".

What does that mean? Not as much water activity companies operating? Tours are limited? Shops are limited hours?

Just wanted to clear that up and show up and most things are closed. :)

Thanks

Approximately 60,000 people live and work on the island so basically everything is "open" year round. The weather affects beach and water activities so in March you can expect it to be too cool for swimming in the ocean for example. See www.weather.bm If you play golf you'll be fine.

Tell us what you expect to do on a vacation in Bermuda and we'll try to help you.

As you've noted. mid-March will be the end of Bermuda's winter-off season. Ocean Water Temps will run in the low-to-mid-60ºs,...daytine Air Temps may run in a range from the low-60ºs-to-low-70ºs. This combination makes it '..chillier..' than most (hardier denizens of the 'Great White North' excepted) find comfortable for extended periods in the water or most watersports activities. You'll find that many watersports and tour excursion operators will curtail or cease operations during this off-winter season. Though mid-March is the tail end of the 'off season', it's still too early for the 'cruise season', which does not begin until early/mid-April-through-October and it's also early for most air-hotel tourism arrivals. Even those operators who may be open probably won't be operating on any regular schedule...and may well cancel excursions or tours if they don't have sufficient paying customers to offset the cost at the fuel dock.

As for most stores, shops, restaurants, pubs, clubs, etc. most will remain open year 'round (with the exception of most outdoor dining venues)....though given the current general and local economic climate and the decline in tourism, some will close for the winter-off season. This has been especially prevalent in the olde towne of Saint George's. But for the most part any such closings probably won't materially affect your visit.

Shops are open year round but a few might have winter hours meaning they might open an hour late and close an hour early. All the hamilton shops will be 9 to 5. Water activities will be pretty much non existent in march with the exception of some scuba shops. I think tony from www.aquaticbermuda.com will be open in march if you want a good glass bottom boat tour. If you want snorkelling or water skiing or helmet diving you might be outta luck.

thanks for the replies. We're with a 3 and 6y/o so we wont really go on any wild adventures. haha. We've done most of the snorkeling and all that stuff all over the carribean so thats not our on priority list.

Maybe 1 water tour would be sufficient just for the kids. Other than that, just lounging around, checking out the historical sites, going out to eat is fine with us.

You'll probably find at least a couple of glass bottom boat reef tour operations offering trips out over the reefs.

As noted, there will be any number of shore based attractions open and operating as usual that may be of interest to you and the family

Though the ocean may still be a bit 'chillier' than most people find 'comfortable' for extended periods in the water, you can still pack a picnic lunch, head out to South Shore Park (from Horseshoe Bay to Warwick Long Bay) and beachcomb / walk along the foreshore, dunes at the back and clifftops above, until you find a spot (a small beach, secluded cove, etc) that's '..juuuuust right..' and spend a few pleasant hours in the sun, in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet.

If you'll be in Hamilton on a MONDAY, between Noon-1 PM (from November-thru-April) there is a weekly SKIRLING ceremony ("..authentic kilted pipers, drummers and dancers perform to the bagpipe ‘skirl’ of the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band..") offered up at historic FORT HAMILTON (just a bit east and north of downtown). Fort Hamilton is located on the heights above Hamilton Harbour with commanding harbour views. The fort is mostly beneath ground, accessible down and up steps carved into the living stone. The once '..dry moat..' around the fortification has been converted to a remarkable, semi-tropical garden.

For a longer day on Monday, one could begin earlier--10:30 AM--at City Hall, for a free, escorted walking-tour of historic Hamilton, ending the walking tour at Fort Hamilton for the Skirling ceremony beginning at Noon.
